The Teachers’ Day

The History of The Teachers’ Day

Turkish people used the alphabets of Uyghur and Gokturks. Assenting to Islam by the 8 th century, they gave up using these alphabets and began to use the Arabic alphabet

After the victory of The Indepencence War,Ataturk who founded The Turkish Republic on 29th October 1923 had fostered many innovations in the military, economical , social and cultural state of the country. One of these novelties is the declaration of the Latin alphabet instead of Arabic Alphabet on 1st November 1928.

After Turkish people adapted the new alphabet, there had been a great campaign in the country in order to help people learn and use the new letters so there would be an increase in the number of literate people. Both to the young and to the elderly, everybody was given the chance to learn how to read and write in the Public Schools which were opened on 24th November1928.

Since it was the day that the Public Schools were opened and Atatürk was chosen as The Headteacher, 24th November has been celebrated as The Teachers’ Day since 1981.
