Loved being outside in nature

Very creative, many inventions

He attended Univ. of Wisconsin

Got a job helping run a small factory

Mechanically minded - factory machines & Inventions

Wisconsin to California

Injured when file pierced his eye

Swore he’d give life to God’s Creation (Nature) if sight returned

Spent 6 years reading,writing & studying in Yosemite

Fought for Wilderness

Founded Sierra Club

Wanted National Park System

Fought for preservation of wilderness areas

Tried to stop Hetch-Hetchy dam project

Died in 1914

• Increased protected forested lands from 43 million acres to over 194 million
