Recorded on the blacklist of the Hollywood movie industry, his career collapsed. Jules Dassin is then forced into exile in Europe.

After a difficult start (most of his films are banned in the United States) and several film projects, he finally receives the support of a French producer for the making of a film in 1955, "Du Rififi" . Low-budget film about the adventures of a jewel thief, co-written and performed by Jules Dassin under the assumed name Perlo Vita, he won an amazing success not only in Europe but also America.

The film was awarded the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival the same year.

His greatest success remains probably "Never on Sunday" , a 1960 film whose action takes place in Greece. The story is that of a prostitute, played by the actress Melina Mercouri he would later marry. Jules Dassin plays in this film the role of the main character, a naive American tourist who tries to get back on the right path.
