Muzička škola „Stevan Mokranjac“ osnovana je 1949. godine, dok je srednja muzička škola osnovana 1982. godine.
U osnovnoj i srednjoj muzičkoj školi ukupno ima oko 800 učenika.
Muzička škola „Stevan Mokranjac“ osim u Požarevcu ima odeljenja i u gradovima: Kostolac, Kučevo, Malo Crniće i Veliko Gradište.
Škola poseduje sopstveni Tonski studio i izdaje svake godine kompakt disk „Najbolji učenici“. Poseduje video tehniku i beleži sve najznačajnije događaje. Izdaje list „Prima Vista“. Takmičenje solfeđista u martu i Takmi-čenje drvenih duvača u aprilu; gradsku manifestaciju Кulturno leto na svojoj Letnjoj sceni, koncerte najzna-čajnijih gostujućih umetnika tokom školske godine.
Škola je dobitnik velikog broja nagrada. Učenici i nastavnici škole nastupaju na svim gradskim manife-stacijama. Škola ima dobru saradnju sa mnogim kul-turnim ustanovama u zemlji i inostranstvu.
U školi radi većinom mlad, obrazovan kadar, koji je deo obrazovanja prošao kroz ovu ustanovu.
