Teaching School Health

Using

Bean Bags & Balls

+YEA, We Get to Teach Health!

We go to College/University to get an Elementary Teaching Certification in our preferred field.

We get a teaching position & find out not only do we teach our “core” subject areas. We get to teach Health as well!

How many of you went to school specifically for Health?

How Do we fit it ALL in?

+

Health is NOT a Stand Alone subject it is Part of Every ‘Core’ Subject & is the ‘Core’ of Every

Subject. ~ me

+Your mindset on letting

Students Move? Allow? Expect

Permit? Require

Tolerate? Insist

Let? Promote

Movement in the classroom needs to be an expectation not a Reward or Punishment

+MOVEMENT in the Classroom must be an EXPECTATION

Start on the first day you have students

EVEN if you think you don’t have time

Start with one subject

KEEP it simple

+

The Brain Retains, Processes, & Expresses information more easily through movement

The Brain ‘s novelty

‘s & ‘s add novelty

+Research Has Shown

Purposeful movement helps with Classroom Management

Students become more willing to learn & participate when allowed/encouraged to move

All student participate not just the “usual” suspects

+Incorporating Bean Bags & Balls

into the classroom

Bean Bags-hand over hand with partner for spelling, or whole group counting/alphabet activities

Bounce Ball(s) alone or with partner spelling/math activities

Bean Bags/Balls part of a Math, Spelling, Science, ELA centers

Bounce Ball(s) during Transition time ie. After recess, or back from Specials (2-3 min)

Have students take bean bag when going to Specials & pass from hand to hand around body

+Ground Rules for Using

Bean Bags & Balls

Make sure Students Know & Review Expectations

Hold Students Accountable IMMEDIATELY

Teacher Makes Rules

Students Make Rules (teacher supervises)

Classroom makes rules (teacher & students)

+Partnering Students for Activities

One Way

1st time let students choose who to partner with

*Every time after that they must choose someone different until they have been with every classmate

Another way (teacher partners students/groups)

~ Group low/high, med/high, med/low

*Take turns as to who is leader in group

Mix them up!
