Reagents!

Hey guys! Here’s a list of the reagents that I think are important to know. Remember, this list is not completely comprehensive! I can’t include every single reagent on here, but this should

have most of the big ones. All of the images on here come from the Smith textbook. In fact, all of this information mostly comes from the Key Concepts sections of your textbook. I just

compiled them into this document!

Please make sure to review other study materials in addition to this! Best of luck!!! You can do this!

Chapter 16

Electrophilic Addition

H-X

Chapter 18

Electrophilic aromatic Substitution

Halogenation

X2 / FeX3

Nitration

HNO3 / H2SO4

Sulfonation

SO3 / H2SO4

Friedel-Crafts Alkylation

RCl / AlCl3

Friedel-Crafts Acylation

RCOCl / AlCl3

Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution

Strong nucleophiles! (-OH, -OR, -NH2, -SR)

Addition elimination

Elim-Add: EXTREME CONDITIONS; BENZYNE INTERMEDIATE

Halogenation of alkyl benzenes

Oxidation of alkyl benzenes

Reduction

Chapter 19

Preparation of carboxylic acids

Oxidation of primary alcohols

Oxidation of alkyl benzenes (see ch 18)

Oxidative Cleavage of Alkynes

Not a reagent but might be useful: general acid-base rxn of carboxylic acids

Chapter 20

General stuff:

Nucleophilic addition

Nucleophilic Substitution

Reduction:

REDUCTION, here’s a nice couple of chart things:

Oxidation

Organometallic reagents!

Protecting groups are a thing you should probably review!

TBDMS-Cl/ imidazole is an example. Step 3 is deprotection.

Grignard + Carbon dioxide -> carboxylic acid

Chapter 21

Nucleophilic addition

Wittig

Chapter 22

Nucleophilic acyl substitution

Chapter 23

Chapter 24

Chapter 25

Chapter 26

Chapter 27

Chapter 28 doesn’t really have much in terms of reagents

Chapter 29

Chapter 30 doesn’t really have much in terms of reagents

Miscellaneous charts/Figures

GOOD LUCK Y’ALL!!! HAPPY STUDYING!~
