Fraction decimal switch

Decimals and fractions are just different ways of showing the same value. A half can be written as a fraction ½ or as a decimal 0.5.

Fractions where the denominator (the bottom number) is a power of ten can easily be shown as decimals.

7/10 written as a decimal is 0.734/100 written as a decimal is 0.34

Take a look at the following fractions and decimals and try to match them to their equivalents.

Fraction decimal switch – getting trickier!

Remember when changing decimals to

fractions0.4 is the same as 4/10BUTYou may need to show the fraction in its simplest form, so find a number that divides into the numerator and the denominator.2 divides into 4 twice and into 10 five times so4/10 becomes 2/5!

or when changing fractions to decimalswhen the denominator is not a power of ten.Take 4/5 for example. You need to ‘change’ the denominator to a power of ten. 5 times by 2 gives 10 but now you need to do the same to the numerator so 4 times 2 gives 8. 4/5 is the same as 8/10 which is 0.8 as a decimal, phew!!!
