Instructional Goals and Objectives
• The students will develop understanding addition facts from 0 to 10.
• Students will use mini-motor cards as a strategy to solve story problems with single digits.
• Students will use a number line as one strategy to solve story problems.
• Students will work in heterogeneous groups of 3-4 to problem solve and discuss strategy.

Instructional Activities• Use the mini-motor counters to complete the
problems on the worksheet• Divide students into cooperative groups of
three or four.• Have students rotate between the worksheet
and the Interactive Number Line for practice.• Have the students create their own story
problems using their own ideas.

Sample Story Problems
• Zack had three mini-motor cars. • Sue was using four for her story problem. • How many mini-motor cars did they have in total?
• Sue and Zack were racing five mini-motor cars. • Zack found two more in the classroom toy box.• How many mini-motor cars can they race now?

Extension Activities
• Gifted students: may come up with +1 and +0 math fact stories using objects from their daily life, moving beyond using manipulatives.
• ELLs: may share with the class names for the numerals in their primary language.
• Students with Cognitive Delay: may utilize manipulatives as long as needed, may have access to alternate manipulatives, may complete fewer problems.

Formative assessment
• Working in groups of 3-4
• As a team students design two problems- that use the manipulatives as a subject
- that show the meaning of 0
- that demonstrate an understanding of +1
• Problem should be written on the back of the worksheet
