Sunday night was a beaut i fu l night on H o p e ' s c ampus . If you w e r e n ' t
up a f t e r midnigh t , you missed a lovely sight. T h e c a m p u s w a s c o v e r e d
in poetry. Words we re plastered on wal ls , w i n d o w s , and stalls. Class -
r o o m doors ached for love, and suppor t pi l lars l aughed about loss and
Tuesdays underwate r .
A s n o w fell upon c a m p u s . W h i t e s n o w with the black f l ecks of letters
and w o r d s sett led upon y o u r wor ld as you slept or f in i shed your home-
work. Hopefu l ly , you we re o n e of the lucky f e w w h o w a n d e r e d out in the
midst of that whi te s to rm. You may have looked a round , read some ,
s imply apprec ia ted that o thers we re there , and whis t led a tune to your-
self as you strol led th rough c a m p u s .
Bui on M o n d a y morn ing , the m u s i c of the poet ic s n o w was d r o w n e d
out by the sound of s n o w b l o w e r s be ing pul l -s tar ted with sharp tugs.
The s n o w remova l m a c h i n e was set in mot ion , and re leased upon the
c a m p u s — e a t i n g up p o e m a f t e r p o e m , s n o w f l a k e a f t e r s n o w f l a k e . tear-
ing through exp re s s ions of beauty , t ruth, a n d learning.
S o m e o n e had the m a i n t e n a n c e depa r tmen t pull d o w n ove r 1,000 po-
e m s on c a m p u s . T h e m a i n t e n a n c e p e o p l e c l a im that it is against col lege
policy to a l low pos t ings in non-bu l le t in boa rd areas , but is that really
ihe case? Are all things pos ted not on bul le t in boards immedia te ly pulled
d o w n the next day in a c a m p u s - w i d e p u r g e ? T h e r e may be e v i d e n c e to
the contrary, e v i d e n c e that sugges t s that the poet ry was pul led d o w n for
a d i f fe ren t reason.
It is w o r r i s o m e to guess r easons why the poet ry was pul led d o w n .
Perhaps the p o e m s appea red as a threat to s o m e on c a m p u s . T h e p o e m s
might have built a cha l l enge out of words , meter , and line b r e a k s — a
cha l l enge to the neat o rde red wor ld of H o p e w h e r e w h a t is said is al-
w a y s in line with wha t is supposed to be said. But at an inst i tut ion de-
voted to learning and the liberal arts, w h o cou ld feel such a cha l l enge
ar is ing in poe t ry?
Hope m a k e s a big deal abou t their l iberal arts na ture to the fami l i e s of
incoming s tudents . I sn ' t it t ime f o r the co l l ege to m a k e a big deal abou t
its liberal arts na ture to the s tudent b o d y ? About 5 0 s tudents go t exc i ted
about this endeavor , a n d read poet ry ou t s ide of c lass all s emes t e r to f ind
those p o e m s that they felt we re jus t the right ones to sha re wi th the
c a m p u s c o m m u n i t y . T h e pho tocop ied and c l ipped those p o e m s , get t ing
ready to share the vo ices that a f f ec ted their l ives with the rest of c a m -
pus.
And wha t did these s tuden t s ge t? T h e i r poet ry pul led d o w n the fo l -
lowing morn ing , m u c h of it taken a w a y be fo re they we re able to see the
beauty of a c a m p u s covered in poetry. They got a m e s s a g e that the people
w h o run this c a m p u s d o not want to be m o v e d , inspi red , or even s imply
accep t ing . T h e s tuden t s d i d n ' t ge t to see their c a m p u s covered in words ,
and all fell be t rayed and let d o w n by a supposed ly l iberal-ar ts col lege .
But I w a s out that n ight , and I was one w h o w a l k e d a n d whis t led to
myse l f , g lad that the p o e m s we re there. T o those fifty s tudents , I thank
you. Your p o e m s we re lorn d o w n , but not be fo re a f e w peop le cou ld be
reached and a f f ec t ed . D o n ' t lose fa i th in the co l lege , in yourse l f , a n d
especia l ly not in the p o w e r of poet ry itself. Poe t ry exis ted long b e f o r e
Hope Col lege , and it will exist long a f t e r the school is gone , g iv ing
hope w h e n Hope is lost.

FANTASTIC FACILITIES'. The first floor Van Zoeren women's bath-room ranks among the finest at Hope. Many of Hope's restrooms scored high marks for cleanliness, waste receptacles, sufficient supplies, and functioning stall doors. Odors and no handicapped stalls were the most common problems found in all of the restrooms around campus.
