SUSPENSION:

Blood because it is made of red and white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.

Dirty water because some of the dirt is dissolved into the water and some is not.

EXAMPLES OF SUSPENSIONS

All Suspensions are HETEROGENOUS MIXTURES!!!

WHAT IS A SOLUTION???

WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF A SOLUTION?

SOLUTE SOLVENT DEFINITON: The

__________ substance of a solution

Examples:

DEFINITON: The __________ substance of a solution

Examples:

What is known as the UNIVERSAL SOLVENT and WHY???

WATER!!! WATER IS THE UNIVERSAL SOLVENT

Water can dissolve almost anything b/c it is POLAR:

Polar substances are partially positive and partially negative…so almost everything is attracted to it and wants to bind to it! The negatively charged

particles will be attracted to this end of the water molecule

The positively charged particles will be attracted to this end of the water molecule

SOLUTION:

Sugar water (Kool aid) because the sugar dissolves into the water and is distributed evenly

Salt water, Sugar water, vinegar, …anything where a substance is completely dissolved into another substance

EXAMPLES OF SOLUTIONS

MIXTURE:HOMOGENOUS MIXTURES: HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES:

THEY ARE SOLUTIONS!!! You can separate the

parts, but they can also be one!

Salt water Koolaid Sugar water ETC!

Scientific Examples: Wood:

Blood: (I KNOW, I KNOW! We’ve already talked about blood as a suspension…but it is both!)

Granite:

Air: ???
