Saul, his family, and David
Jonathan’s soul was bound with David
Community loved David - David has slain his ten thousands
Michal was in love with David - the bride price
Saul wanted to kill David
It was a good/bad relationship
Saul accepted David, then he won another victory and Saul wanted to kill him.
Michal saves David
She took an idol and placed in the bed.
When Saul’s men came, she told them he was ill.
David escaped with Samuel.
Saul’s men came to capture him and began prophesying.
Jonathan saves David
Shoots arrows to let David know if it is safe to come to the New Moon feast.
When David did not come to the feast, he thought David must be ceremonially unclean.
Jonathan told him that David went to Bethlehem.
David at Nob
He asked Ahimelek for bread.
The only bread was consecrated bread.
David also asked for weapons - received Goliath’s sword.
Then went to Gath
Jewish tradition holds that the bread was baked in a U pattern so that there were two ends facing each other. The reason it was called the bread of the “Presence” is that the bread signified that at the tabernacle God’s presence met with the people face to face. Leviticus 24:6 explains that there were 12 loaves on the table and also stipulates that only the priests are to eat the bread.
“It is the holiest portion for Aaron and his sons from the fire offerings of the Lord; this is a permanent rule.”
Ahimelek broke the letter of the law while keeping the spirit of the law (generosity) Read Luke 6:3-5
David acts insane
David went to live in the land of the Philistines. (with Goliath’s sword)
The Philistines knew who he was.
He acted insane while with them.ִעים גָּ ְמשֻׁ
After leaving Gath, he went to Mizpah and gathered those in distress or in debt.
Saul’s treatment of Ahimelek
Saul heard that Ahimilek gave bread and a sword to David.
He sent for him and his sons.
Ahimelek’s explains that he does not know about the feud between Saul and David.
Saul had Doeg the Edomite kill Ahimelek and his sons (priests of the Lord) because Saul’s men would not do it.
David - prophet?
David hears that the Philistines are attacking Keilah (Citadel)
He asks the Lord if he should go and attack.
God answers that he should.
(Urim and Thummim)?
Saul pursues David
Saul heard that David went to Keilah and felt that he had David trapped.
David again inquired of the Lord - will Saul come against me?
God answered.
David continued to elude Saul throughout chapter 23
En Gedi - Springs of the young goats
Saul goes in a cave to relieve himself.
David could have killed Saul
Why didn’t he?
He cut off a corner of his robe.
David would not kill Saul
Saul is the anointed of the Lord. David would not let his men kill Saul.
When Saul left, David came out of the cave and told him that he was not seeking Saul’s life.
Saul replied, “I know that you will surely be king.”
David vowed not to kill Saul’s offspring when he became king.
