He told Saul he was going to lose the battle, Israel would be defeated by the Philistines, and

Saul and his sons would die.

Reminder: David and his men have been living with the Philistines for about sixteen months (27:7)

Witch of Endor Samuel came up

4

1 Samuel 29 1 Now the Philistines gathered to-gether all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain (springs) which is in Jezreel.

… some 40 miles northeast of Aphek. The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of

the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty.

5

2 And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rereward (rear of the army) with Achish (the king).

6

3a Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here?

Achish trusted David, but his warlords did not.

I think that God is moving David out of the battle.

7

3b And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years (16 months), and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?

Achish found no fault because he wasn’t looking for fault, and that was God.

David had fought against the allies of the Philistines, lied about it, slaughtered the people.

Achish never caught on.

8

David made a monkey out of him.

9

4 And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with Achish; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary to us: for wherewith should he reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men? 5 Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

10

Achish was fooled, but his warlords were not.

They remembered their history. And they were right; David would have turned

against them in the battle.

They demanded that Achish send David back to Ziklag.

11

6 Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favor thee not. 7 Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.

Achish had no choice; he could not fight without his warlords.

12

8 And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

This is fake regret from David.

13

9 And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.

Again -- no choice!

14

10 Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master's servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.

Take your men and leave at first light in the morning.

15

11 So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

David is out of it, as God would have it.

The battle is about to begin.

Israel is going to lose and lose big!

16

Points to PonderAchish trusted David, although David had lied

to him throughout his stay in his country.

He wasn’t looking for fault in David.

He liked David. We see what we are looking for.

Look for fault – find it.

Look for good – find it.

Love looks for the good in people.

17

The Philistine warlords remembered their history and were not fooled by David.

We need to remember lessons learned.

2 Peter 3 1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: 2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the Commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior:

18

There is no need to make the same mistakes over and over and over again.

Learn from the Word of God.Learn to live life God’s Way.

Let us walk humbly and obediently to the Word of God in the Power of His Holy Spirit.
