Lon Haenel is Director of Consumer Marketing for Illinois-based Rockford Register Star and Freeport Journal-Standard. Prior to joining Gatehouse Media, Lon was vice president of circulation and digital media for Bliss Communications, in Janesville, Wisconsin. He has 19 years of experience in growing revenue and audience with newspapers and websites. Over the years, Lon played roles of ad manager, audience manager, circulation director, weekly publisher, consumer marketing director, and digital director. In 2012, Haenel rolled out the company’s new paid content and digital vision. Lon took the newspaper industry’s pay wall practices and put it on steroids. In 2014, he launched Local Matters Digital, the company’s first digital service agency. Lon lives in Janesville, Wisconsin with his wife Sarah, and daughter McKenna. They own two purebred Shelties. In their spare time, they enjoy golf, downhill skiing, and traveling.
Angie Grissom is an 18-year veteran in the consumer marketing, sales and services division within the newspaper media industry. She started her career as a Customer Service Representative at the Louisville Courier-Journal, a Gannett company. Angie held many different positions during her 12-year tenure in Louisville including single copy sales, circulation systems programming, outbound telemarketing, and consumer sales and retention management. Under Angie’s leadership, The Courier-Journal became pioneers of customer relationship management which ultimately increased subscriber retention supporting year-over-year subscription growth despite increased pricing. Angie is a native of the Texas area, growing up in the Rio Grande Valley for most of her childhood. She and her husband Scott have three children; Bradley, Jackson and Parker. The family spends most of their time at youth baseball tournaments, youth basketball games and neighborhood/back yard football “games”. Angie enjoys and is passionate about personal growth and education; this is why her spare time is spent as a part-time student.

Our Former Presidents While researching stories of the TCMA conventions I discovered the burial places of many of our former Presidents. In the all-male industry of old newspapers, many of the TCMA Presidents only used their initials and their last name. But by using the genealogy records of the US Census, and Texas Death Certificates, I was able to locate the first name of the Presidents. Locating a name in the census was the first step. Knowing the newspaper where the President worked was helpful. The early census listed the occupation of the person. Using that information and the city directories was helpful in verifying the TCMA member. The Texas Death Certificates are online from 1903-1982 and this was another tool to verify the occupation of the member. In addition, I was able to locate several others through Ancestry.com. The final step was looking on a web site, Find A Grave. This web site has millions of grave sites documented online. If I found the TCMA member on the Find A Grave site (or added it if I had the information), I linked it back to the Previous Conference Presidents web page on the TCMA web site. The link is located on the Conference web page near the bottom. Once you open the PDF file, you can click on the Find A Grave memorial number to be taken to the online site. Our founders were Edgar Coleman (E.C) White, Circulation Manager of the Houston Chronicle and Harold Hough, Circulation Manager of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. In several newspaper stories in 1914, 1915, and 1916, others took credit for establishing the Texas Circulation Managers Association but all indications are these two men were the catalyst for the forming of the Association.
