2016
Greetings Mt. Zion Faith Community, Mt. Zion UMC, Do You Love The Lord? You answered, “YES” when I asked you this question in worship on Sunday, June 26. And my reply to you was, “Then Feed His Sheep!” We are focusing the month of July on ways that we can be the hands and feet of Jesus through our ser-mons and with some hands on experiences of Feeding His Sheep. One great opportunity will be on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Mt. Zion Mission Saturday. You will want to be a part of this. What is Mt. Zion Mission Saturday? When Pastor Joan arrived at Mt. Zion a year ago, one of the first things that she was told was that Mt. Zion was a mission church. At many of the "Breakfast with the Pastor" gatherings, many of you told Pastor Joan that you would like to see Mt. Zion provide more opportunities for families to do mission work. So out of those request, our Mission and Evangelism and Extravagant Hospitality Teams have planned this "Family Mission Opportu-nity " for our entire congregation to experience serving outside the walls of our church build-ing to be the hands and feet of Christ Jesus. What will we do on Mission Saturday? We have 3 sites out in the community that we have identified where we will send groups to give out three new pairs of socks in a gallon zip lock bag and a bottle of water with a "Jesus Loves You and So Do We" label. We will also give out a Christian calling card with a scripture verse and a message to each person. Washington, DC site - We will be going to Franklin Park where the unhoused and homeless people gather during the day. We will take sandwiches, socks, and bottled water to give out to everyone in the park. If any of the individuals in the park would like us to pray for them, we will have designated persons in our group who will pray with them. Baltimore site - We will go to Ames United Methodist Church on Carey and Baker Streets. We will help the Ames members prepare a lunch meal, set up for the meal, serve the meal and clean up. We will also give out socks and bottled water to everyone. Laurel -Route 1 Shelter - We will give out socks and bottled water to the people at the shelter. We will also have designated persons in our group who will pray with the clients if they want prayer. How many people are needed for Mission Saturday? We need 25 people at the Washington, DC site. We need 25 people at the Baltimore site. We need 10 people at the Laurel site. What time will we do the Mission Opportunity? On Saturday July 23, all the teams will meet at the church at 9:00 for a group prayer and then sent out. The Baltimore team will serve at the site until 2:00pm. The Washington, DC team will probably serve at the site till 1:00pm. The Laurel team will probably serve at the site until 12:00-12:30. If I am unable to go out to one of the sites on Saturday are there other ways that I can serve? YES! From now until July 21st: (continued on page 2)
2
**You can bring in new pairs of socks (all sizes, colors, for children, women and men) ** You can bring in a case or cases of bottled water ** On Saturday - July 23, at 9:00am you can come to the church and help us make 400 sandwiches that we will take to the Washington, DC site. This is a Mission Opportunity for everyone. Every age is invited, welcome and encouraged to serve. You can even bring other family members and friends. We will carpool from Mt. Zion to the sites, so please sign up beforehand so we can have an accurate count. Who will be the Team Leaders at each site? The Baltimore site Team Leaders - Debby Klopp, Fred Towner and Pastor David. The Washington site Team Leaders - Elizabeth Blough, Will Scott, and Pastor Joan. The Laurel site Team Leaders Rod Barr and tba.
If you have any other questions feel free to speak to any one of the Team Leaders mentioned above. How can I prepare for Mt. Zion Mission Day? Pray this short prayer: "Come, Lord Jesus, and touch us with the power of the Holy Spirit that we may go out and be a bless-ing to someone else in ways that we could never imagine. It is not about us- it is all about you, Lord." Amen Mt. Zion UMC, DO YOU LOVE THE LORD? YES! THEN FEED HIS SHEEP! Blessings, Pastor Joan
Sunday, July 3 Celebrate the return of the CAMP HOPE Mission Team
We are asking everyone to wear a Camp Hope, Mount Zion, and/or Mission related shirt as we celebrate the work of Camp Hope Missions.
VBS CELEBRATION AND A CHURCH-WIDE COOKOUT
Sunday, July 24 – beginning at 10:00am with ONE WORSHIP SERVICE in our sanctuary filled with dancing, singing, puppets, testimonies about VBS and Praising God in Spectacular ways. Our worship will be on Fire for
Christ! Dress casual this day because immediately after our worship we will go outside underneath the BIG TENT and enjoy an Old-Fashioned Cookout with a pig roast, hot dogs and hamburgers, homemade coleslaw,
potato salad and baked beans. Everyone is asked to bring a dessert to share with 10 people. The horseshoes will be set up, the Gaga ball pit is open, the volleyball net is up and other games and fun will be going on. You don’t
want to miss this wonderful day. Make sure you are a part of us!

Discipleship
Kayak Regata “May It Be Well With Your Hull”
On Sunday, June 12th, a hearty crew of 13 kayakers from Mt. Zion put their Kayaks into the Patuxent River at Haviland Mill Road and headed down the river. It was a beautiful afternoon, and in spite of trees to duck under and logs to go around, all made it to the take out point at Browns Bridge Road with only minor mishaps. In fact it was such a good journey that there is already talk of the next kayak adventure. Watch for it! Find your kayak and be ready to go.
Grillin’ With the Gospels Grilling Luke & John On July 6th & 13th
You’re invited to meet Pastor David at the grill, enjoy a special cooked meal, and open the Bible with him to discover the wonders of the Gospels. In June, we cov-ered Matthew & Mark. In July, we turn to Luke & John to see what treasures we may find in them in the 60-minute sweeping study. And it’s all outdoors (unless it rains)! A special feature of these Wednesday evening gatherings is that while the food comes off the grill at 6pm, children are invited to hit the Gaga Ball Court with Mrs. Jena while parents can open the Gospel with Pastor David. Following the study, parents and adults are invited to Join Pastor David in the Gaga Ball court before the sun goes down. Most of the events in the Gospels happened outdoors and Jesus was always talking about trees, birds, seeds, & other beautiful things of nature. It stands to reason, that the best place to study the Gos-pels would be outdoors. Come & get a good meal & find out what God may have to show us as we open His word with only the sky above.
BUMZE
(Bible, UM Heritage, Mt. Zion History,
Engagement in Mission)
On Sunday, July 31 a new venture in growing in disci-
pleship opens at Mt. Zion. It is called “BUMZE” and
features five weeks of sessions on Bible, United Meth-
odist heritage, Mt. Zion history, and Engagement in
Mission. The objective is to give participants a solid
understanding of what it means to be apart of the
Church and to engage in it’s mission in the world. All
are welcome to get involved in this venture! Just
come to Conference Room 3 where the Drop-in Class
meets at 10:10AM for the first session on July 31. This
will be an orientation. For more information, contact
Deb Leiss, Jenny Burtzlaff, Betty Ames, or Gail Cof-
fin. Hope to see you there!
A Bike Ride Around the BWI Airport
Saturday, July 30th
Pastors Joan & David are inviting everyone to do some-
thing fun together to end the month of July: go for a
Saturday morning bicycle ride around the trail that cir-
cles the BWI Airport. It’s less than 14 miles, and since it
goes in a complete circle, no one can get lost and we will
easily meet up at the end of the ride. Pump up your tires!
Fill your water bottle! Eat a good breakfast! And off we
will go...everyone riding at their own pace.
Here’s the plan: Meet at the church at 9:00am with your
bike. We will drive via caravan and park at the school
parking lot along the bicycle route. We will read an in-
spiring Psalm and then head out together, taking what-
ever time we like to go around-some may even want to
go around twice. The objective will be to get around be-
fore Pastors Joan & David on their Tandem!
Sound like fun? If so, indicate your interest on the info
stub on Sunday, and off we will go!

TAKING IT TO THE STREETS
On Saturday, July 9, Maple Lawn will hold its Fourth of July Celebration and the Mt. Zion UMC Evangelism Team will be there letting everyone know that we are in the community and extending our welcome to come and join us. Mt. Zion was there in May for the Half Marathon event, and we return to set up our table in July in the hopes of touching lives for Jesus Christ.
We are looking for persons from the congregation who would volunteer to be at our table. There
will be Bibles to give away and materials to put in peoples’ hands to let them know of our church.
We will also be asking those who visit us to fill out an information card so that we can invite them
to events at Mt. Zion. The July 9 Celebration runs from 3:00-9:00PM. Volunteers are needed and
appreciated any time. Please contact Fred Towner or Elizabeth Blough or Pastor David. It may
be your hand that reaches out to one of those who visit our table that welcomes that person into
our church.
