note:The first owners of Wild Cherry wereJames F. Hillman and Marguerite W.Hillman. Hillman was a notedbusinessman, conservationist andcivic leader in Pittsburgh. A pioneerin reclamation and remediation ofland, Hillman donated more than3,000 acres for a state park, which,in the 1970's, was the largest of itskind in the country. In 1931, DanielGarber wrote a letter to Hillman'swife, describing Wild Cherry to itsnew owner:
"I certainly never got quite so muchthe feel and atmosphere of a day inMay as I did in 'Wild Cherry.' Thegreens in the foreground meadowand in those young willows havealways delighted me.
I mean they could not be mistakenfor any other week in a year. I amsure as you live with it you will feelas I do about them.
The distant valley, with woodedHills in mid morning. The sunpenetrating and suffusing there, Iwas also pleased with. It is a verydelicate job that of trying to paintthose violet hazes over hills in May.
The scene is in Solebury Valley -Two miles from my home. The fardistance would be New Hope, Pa.and Lambertville, N.J. but of course,at that distance in that morningeverything thing was dissolved inmist and light. You have one of myhappier works and I hope you aregoing to enjoy it.
Sincerely yours,Daniel Garber."
