Danish Foreign Mail across and along the Baltic Sea

The following seven lots represent a unique selection of some of the fi nest Foreign Mail covers existing from Denmark to Northern European countries around the Baltic Sea. In the 19th century mail to these countries had to be routed either by ship across the Baltic Sea or by rail along the Baltic Sea to its fi nal destination.

To destinations North

or Northeast, especially

Scandinavian countries, mail

had to be carried across the

Baltic Sea by ships.

Mail to destinations East

or Southeast were normally

routed via the Danish Post

Offi ce in Hamburg-Altona

linked with the Prussian

railway to Berlin. Therefore

the mail passed through the

territory of the German-

Austro Postal Union

(GAPU) and postal rates

were based on the Danish-

Prussian postal convention

of 1853 and the ‘rayon’

system of zones.

Depending on the individual Postal Convention with the Foreign Postal Administrations,

- letters could be part paid to the Danish border/harbour only. Then the recipient had to pay

the postage from the Danish border to its fi nal destination.

- fully paid to destination with Danish stamps or

- fully paid to destination by creating a ‘combination-cover’ bearing Danish and foreign

adhesives on the cover.

If a letter was sent by ship, the postage was also infl uenced by the location of the harbour the ship landed at and the distance

(rayon zones) from there to the fi nal destination. This may cause different rates of postage even if the letter was sent from

and to identical cities.

The Foreign Destination Mail covers offered here originate from the Mark Lorentzen Grand Prix International collection.

This selection includes a fantastic pair of covers: the famous 18 RBS and 22 RBS mixed frankings, both with the 2 RBS blue

from the Schickler correspondence from Copenhagen to Stettin demonstrating the impact of routing to postage. This ‘pair

of covers’ is possibly the most important and fi nest in Danish Postal History and a ‘crown jewel’ for either a Traditional or

Postal History Denmark collection.
