ForewordThis volume is the latest in a series of base books designed to give the his-
torical record of the business indicators which are presented in the monthly S U R V E YOF C U R R E N T BUSINESS. This is the ninth edition in its present form. The 1932Statistical Supplement to the S U R V E Y OF C U R R E N T BUSINESS was followed bythe Statistical Supplements of 1936, 1938, 1940, 1942, 1947, 1949, and 1951. Untilup-dated in 1955, this report will be the standard reference essential for proper under-standing and use of the 40-page Monthly Business Statistics Section of the S U R V E YOF C U R R E N T BUSINESS.
The 2,600 series of business statistics presented here were selectedgiventhe space considerations of monthly issueas significant measures of the currentoperations of the national economy. The selection has been determined by our ex-perience since 1921 in publishing the monthly S U R V E Y OF C U R R E N T BUSINESSby years of exploring with business the information most useful to each trade andindustry group and to business in general.
The statistical tables first present monthly data from January 1949 throughDecember 1952 and annual averages of monthly data from 1935 through 1952. Theexplanatory notes which follow provide sources and descriptionsas complete asbrevity will permitof the data contained in the tables in this volume and in themonthly issues of the S U R V E Y OF C U R R E N T BUSINESS.
For users desirous of having the monthly tabulations going back for yearsearlier than are here presented, reference should be made to previous editions.Small quantities of the 1947 edition (monthly statistics back to 1943) and of the1949 edition are available from the Superintendent of Documents. The supply ofthe 1951 edition is adequate to take care of a continuance of the demand for thisvolume for quite some time. The sales supply of the prewar editions is exhausted, but reference copies are on file in the Field Offices of the Department of Commerceand in the hundreds of Government depository and other libraries. These provide,in some instances, comparable monthly series as far back as 1923.
To the compilation of the data and the development of the explanatory notespublished here, the many private organizations and Government agencies which reg-ularly provide material for the monthly S U R V E Y OF C U R R E N T BUSINESS contributedgenerously. The Office of Business Economics, well aware that without their helpthis series of volumes would not have been possible, gratefully acknowledges theircontribution. These sources are listed, with their addresses, in an appendix table.
This publication was prepared by the Current Business Analysis Division,of which Dr. C. A. R. Wardwell is Chief. K. Celeste Stokes, Chief of the StatisticalSeries Section, was in immediate charge of its preparation. Staff members contributingwere: Ida W. Bates, Emily J. Brigman, G. Alva Carriere, Dorothy H. Hollohan, JeanM. Plass, Edith M. Robinson, Anne Taeves, and V. Grace Watson.
