Bsgar PresIDent’s WeLComeWelcome to BSGAR 2017!
It is almost 19 years since a small group of Gastrointestinal Radiologists briefl y got together at the RCR Annual Scientifi c Meeting at the Royal College of Physicians in London to discuss the formation of a Special Interest Group in Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (SIGGAR). This led to the inaugural SIGGAR meeting in Manchester in February 1999 with Derrick Martin as Chairman, supported by Maria Sheridan as Secretary and 68 delegates. The Society was renamed BSGAR in 2005 and has continued to grow and develop.
It is quite remarkable that we have not been back to London since, and that this is the fi rst full SIGGAR/BSGAR meeting to be held in the capital. We hope you agree that Nikki Lee and her team at Creative Conferences have done a great job fi nding such an excellent and affordable venue. Another fi rst is that we have a local “Meeting President”, and Dr Andrew Plumb has embraced this role with typical enthusiasm. He has worked closely with Nikki, and the BSGAR committee over the past 12 months to ensure success. This initiative will continue for future BSGAR meetings, and Dr Ian Zealley will be the Meeting President for BSGAR 2018 in Edinburgh.
We have tried to provide a varied programme with some familiar, and some new speakers. There are of course contributions from our clinical colleagues, and this multidisciplinary approach has always been the BSGAR philosophy. There is time set aside for discussion in all of the sessions, so please, get involved and ask questions. Don’t be shy!...and of course a huge thanks to all of the Session Chairs and Speakers for their contributions.
We hope you enjoy all of the sessions, and based on your feedback from last year, we have a fully interactive case-based session with electronic voting to further enhance the Friday afternoon.
I am delighted Professor Steve Halligan has agreed to give the 2017 Richard Farrow Memorial lecture. A former BSGAR President, Professor Halligan has made a massive contribution to BSGAR, and to Gastrointestinal Radiology worldwide.
Thank you to all our sponsors for their valued support, without which this meeting would not have taken place. Please try and fi nd time to speak to them during the breaks.
Finally, I would personally like to thank the BSGAR Committee for all of their hard work over the last year. As well as putting the annual meeting together and running the Society, there is a great deal of unseen work that goes on, encompassing education, research, standards, audit etc and ... a little bit of political infl uence for the benefi t of our specialty. Also a huge thanks to Liz Jones, our administrator, who has made all of our jobs easier through her organisation and tenacity. She doesn’t miss a trick!
I do hope you fi nd the meeting both educational and enjoyable.
Dr Ashley RobertsBSGAR President
I do hope you fi nd the meeting both educational and enjoyable.
