Stingrays

Introduction of Stingray

The Stingray earned a great deal of negative attention when animal promoter and enthusiast Steve Erwin was stung by one and died. That also evoked fear in people that this could be their fate too if they were to come into contact with one of them. The Stingray is closely related to various species of sharks

Values Aspects(Characteristics)The Stingray is very aggressive which is what makes it so dangerous. They have a natural instinct to sting what they come into contact with. That is why they may sting a person that they come into contact with in the water. It isn’t because they have a desire to consume a person or anything like that. The behavior is purely instinct and for their ultimate ability to survive. The Stingray is very curious and they aren’t fearful. That is why they are often seen by those snorkeling or diving. The fact that the Stingray will come very close to them often is part of the myths that they are creatures looking for humans to sting. They are aggressive about territory though so when it finds something out of the ordinary there it will go to investigate.

So , Stingrays are an AGGRESSIVE and CURIOUS creatures !! XD

• The stingray's stinger is razor-sharp, serrated and attached to the stingray's thin tail.

• Stingray can whip it's stinger to pretty much anywhere, extremely quickly as the long, thin tail of the stingray is extremely agile and very flexible.

How is the stingray is able to swim well?

• They flattened their body shape to their advantage by resting on the sea floor and therefore able to hide from predators as well as keep an eye out for potential prey.

• The main predators of the stingrays are sharks, seals, sea lions and large species of carnivorous fish along with humans.

How is the stingray able to camouflage?

• Size of a sting really is dependent on what species of stingray it is.

• Some species of stingray in the deep ocean get up to 14ft long including the tail and these species of stingray naturally have a larger stinger.

• The smaller stingray species tend to have small stingers, so that the stinger is relevant to the size of the body of the stingray.

Extraordinary measurements

• Stingrays breed during the winter and the female stingray gives birth to live young usually between 5 and 15 baby stingrays.

• The baby stingrays develop inside the mother stingray for around 9 months.

• They feed off the remaining yolk in their eggs sacks. When this runs out, the baby stingrays are feed milk in the uterus of the female stingray.

How stingrays reproduce?

• Warm, tropical waters

Habitat of the stingrays

• The serrated edges of the spines can rip flesh when the stings is withdrawn.

• The venom causes intense pain and swelling.

Poisons

ReflectionWe learnt that there are

only 6,394 StingraysIn the world. They are

classified in the suborder Myliobatoidei, which

consists of 8 families of Rays. Stingrays are common

in coastal tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world, and also includes species found

in warmer temperate oceans, such as Dasyatis

thetidis

NE Message We have confidence in our future.

Stingrays are threatened animals in the eco-system and the nature reserves are trying to save them from

being extinct. We must ourselves defend Singapore.

Since stingrays are already endangered, they must protect and defend their homeland and family from

being more endangered.
