Discussion Question IDefine the word “utopia” used in chapter 1.Cite 6 words in chapter 1 that are opposite of “utopia.”Finally, what do you think Hawthorne is trying to say about Hester’s society by putting this contrast of utopia and elements that aren’t utopian?

Discussion Question 2In chapter 1, there is vivid description of details surrounding the prison door:What piece of vegetation stands out amongst all the rest?Why would Hawthorne include a description of something that is different than the rest of the descriptions–does this have a symbolic meaning?

Discussion Question 3In chapter 2, how does the narrator describe the women who are standing outside the prison–what are they doing?What do these women reveal about Hester’s society?These women know Hester’s crime of adultery, and they decide to judge her, but what details should they know before they decide to go and judge?

Discussion Question 4In chapter 2, how is the A described?How do some in the crowd feel about the way Hester’s A is described?Are there crimes today that cause people to “wear an A?”Should public humiliation be a fitting crime for Hester, and for these people?
