When Is a Hero Not a Sandwich?By Ron Steenhoek
While we often use the word hero at the
local sandwich shop, Websters dictionary
more correctly defines the word as any person
admired for courage or exploits, especially in
time of war.
One of our patriotic songs,America, was
written by Katharine Lee Bates. Her third
stanza begins O beautiful for heroes proved inliberating strife, who more than self their
country loved... That is my definition of
a veteran as we remember them this
week.
Most of the veterans Ive
spoken with say that the real
heroes are those who didnt
make it back. However,
those who are still with
us, especially in our
congregation, deserve
our respect and
thanks. One way toshow this respect is
to attend the free
concert by the Iowa
Military Band at the
Civic Center, at 3PM
today. Another is to
attend the Veterans
service this Tuesday,
Nov. 11, at the
memorial at the State Capitol. Another is to visit the Gold Star
museum at Camp Dodge where you will see one of our FFC
veterans featured in the POW display.
If you do not know any veterans at Federated, you can askChuck Underwood, Irv Hawkins, Aaron Baugher, Keith Stahl, or
Bruce Longstreet. They can refer you to others, but saying thanks
to one of the men mentioned would be a great start. They know
the meaning of more than self their country loved.

KZ ChurchWe need to practice, get training, learn
from people that know more than we do. . .
Are we talking about basketball? Football???
What are we talking about?? KNOWING
Gods Word, thats what! 2 Timothy 2:15
encourages us to be able to present ourselvesto God approved. . .not ashamed. . . one who correctly handles
the word of truth. Today in KZ Church, we were challenged to
remember that we need to be growing in our faith by having a
strong foundation in Gods Word. That means to read it, memo-
rize it, think about it, talk about it, ask questions about it. . .you
get the idea!
All K-4th graders are invited to join us in KZ Church, whether
your family is attending the Celebration Service or The River.
Follow the colored footprints up the stairs to Room 240.

grandparents of Dylan Christopher Fernan-
dez. Dylan was born October 6 and is the
fourth child of the McCargars daughter Heather and her husband
Chris. The family lives in Orlando, Florida. Welcome to our
extended Federated family, little one!
Do You See What I See?Rehearsals have begun for this years
Christmas production, but theres still t ime
to join us. All K-6th graders are invited to
be a part of the choirno auditions neces-
sary. Choir rehearsal will be held in Room
240 (thats the KZ Church room) from10:30 until 11:15AM. Parents, please pick
up your children from their Sunday School classrooms and bring
them directly to the KZ Church room for rehearsal. KZ Church
will take place immediately following rehearsal. (Note: Rehears-
als for the drama portions of the Christmas production will be
held on Sunday afternoons.)

includes rehearsal times for all participants. They are posted
throughout the building and are available at the Welcome Cen-
ters, as well as the Childrens Ministry office and the Childrens
Registation Station.
The performance date is Sunday, December 21, 10:00AM.
Thank a VolunteerDoesnt it make you feel good when
someone says Thank you! to you? We
think it would make a special volunteer
feel good, too, especially during this
Thanksgiving month. Even though they
are doing what they do because they
love the Lord and His people and not for
praise, they deserve our thanks.
Sotry to think of some way to letyour Sunday School teacher, AWANA
leader, nursery worker or other favorite
volunteer know you love and appreciate
them. Maybe you could draw a picture or
make a card or bake goodies for them. Be creative and have fun
with this. Just remember how important it is to say Thank you!

have lost loved ones recently:
The family and friends of Dorothy Johnson who died
October 30.
Thank YouDear Federated Family,We are overwhelmed and extremely thankful for the support
we have received from the church. Thank you for the many cards
meals, hugs, words of encouragement, childcare and prayer.
Gods love has been showered upon us through his people. Thank
you so much.Dan and Renee Danhauer
I would like to thank you all for the cards, prayers and con-
cern for me when I was in the hospital. Also for Pastor Bill Green

he made in the hospital. God bless you all.Robert Marean
Thanksgiving Food BasketsThanksgiving food baskets will again
be available this year. All members and
regular attenders and those recommended by
members and regular attenders are eligible
to receive a basket. These baskets are available because of your
gifts to the Deacons Fund. You must turn names in to the church
office at 255.2122 by November 14. No names will be accepted
after that date. Boxes must be picked up on Saturday, November
22, between 8:00AM and 9:00AM from the auditorium foyer.
Please note that those recommending someone for a basket are
asked to pick up the basket and deliver it to the recipient.

ministry. Donations have been low in past
months. Wont you please help us?
The following items are needed:

Board NominationsOur constitution calls for a period of time near the end of each
year when the current board leadership solicits congregational
recommendations of individuals qualified to serve on the church
boards. We will be accepting your input on this between now
and December 1 in preparation for next years election of board
members.
If you would like to recommend someone for consideration,
please submit their name, in written form, as well as the position
you believe they are qualified to serve. These may be submitted
to Tom Hefner in the church office. You may also e-mail sugges-
tions to THefner@FirstFederated.org.

International Day of Prayer forthe Persecuted Church
November 16, 2008Sign Up at Mission Center
Join us to pray for our Christian
brothers and sisters who are perse-
cuted and martyred around the world.
Stop by the Mission Center in the
west side of foyer today and sign up
at the Jail Wall for a 15 minute time
frame. Prayer guides provided.
Two hundred million are suffering
for their faith in Jesus Christ everyday, yet they remain largely forgotton
by the western church. Imagine look-
ing over your shoulder as you studied
the Bible or worshipped in church. Imagine that, if caught, you
could be jailed, beaten, or even killed. Around the world, this is a
stark reality as Christians are persecuted daily.
