Some Canadian Hospital history

Late 1880s many Canadian hospitals built and operated by religious organizations – Catholic nuns (St. Josephs hospitals)

– Salvation Army (hospitals named Grace)

– Seven Day Adventists (Bransom)

– Women’s Christian Organizations

– Jewish (Mount Sinai/Jewish General)

1940s – built municipal or city owned hospitals

Public Healthcare• Canadian system is not the same as the British system:

• 1966 – Medicare

• 1984 – Canada Health Act

• 1980s – hospital foundations created to meet non-operating needs – technology explosion, need for new buildings to replace those built in 1920s through 1970s

• Last year $1.2 billion donated to hospitals and healthcare in Canada

Ontario: how hospitals are funded today

• 90/10 funding from Ministry of Health & Long Term Care for buildings

• Our hospital: $340M, almost 80% is for salaries, then operating costs (food, medications, utilities), approx. $6M for equipment each year

• Community (through the Foundation): $3 million a year

TSH Foundation

• The philanthropic and fundraising arm of the hospital

• Volunteer board of directors, volunteer committees, 8 employees

• We exist to meet needs of the community, served by the hospital

• Recent campaigns: West Wing ($20M for emergency and critical care building), CT Scanners: $2.6 million

• $40 million since 1990s
