Why Moodle? What’s in it for me?Dr. Valerie Irvinevirvine@uvic.ca
Happy Learners(if I do it right…)
What is in it for me?
For face-to-face classes• A “home” for the course• No further requests for lost outlines…• A way for learners to catch-up on missed work• A place for instructors to use for unit/lesson plan
storage • Instead of powerpoint, I open up moodle…
Moodle is… a launching point
For online classes classes• A “home” for the course• A place for learners to have a community• Your place for all teaching and learning activities
Moodle is… a home base
• Using multimedia in your course• To enhance content• To go global• As a back-up if you are sick
• Create a class community • Understanding access
Topics
DON’T BE ANOTHER TEXT-BASED COURSE!
It’s a medium, not an instructional method
Using multimedia
• Kick-start your term with a video introduction• Use your webcam• A high-end video cam• Go interactive and capture along with a
SMARTboard (MacLaurin D211)
Using multimedia
• Draw on an endless supply of amazing audio and videos online and embed them into your course.
• E.g., Youtube, TED Talks, etc.
Using multimedia
• Bring in and record a distance speaker. • Using UVic or TIE Lab video conferencing
systems• Using skype (using group feature and
recording)• Synchronous tools are being piloted
Using multimedia
• Capture some of your instructional sessions (or be prepared to do back-up lectures if sick)• Use Camtasia screen capture
• Free for 30 days or $200ish• Record yourself using a video camera & edit
• Get advice on set-up• Partner with Systems or TIE Lab to do video
capture with synched slides
Using multimedia
HD Video Conferencing
Research & Development
• Recent research showing higher exam results with podcast learning (McKinney, Dyck, & Luber, 2009)
• Empowering to some special needs students
• Connect with Accordent Media Management System
• pilot video distribution or allow student video upload
Using multimedia
• Using blogging and twitter
• for students to connect their learning
• Study on professor credibility and twitter
• Use Moodle’s blog or external hosted at UVic
Creating a Community
• Wiki page for students to volunteer their contact information
• Name, program, etc.
• Blog URL
• Twitter address
• Skype
• etc.
Creating a Community
• Emergence of Choice
• Expanding “anytime, anywhere”
• Collaborative software, social media/personalized learning networks expanded this to “with anyone”
• I would like to expand this to “in any way”
Understanding Access
Criteria for evaluating online courses
http://tie.uvic.ca/criteria.pdf
DL Student CommentsI like the introduction to the course as it is very different from the other online courses I have taken. I am very excited about the assignments because I have been requesting these types of interactions, assignments, and activities in the UVic distance [name] program.
I think to have a video of an instructor to go over the outline and welcome students to the class is great!
DL Student Comments
I am just finishing up 2 online courses at [major online university] right now and I hope that they will start to implement this technology into some of their courses.
DL Student CommentsPast experiences sitting for 3 hours in a lecture …everyone knows that sitting still for three hours is not an ideal learning situation, have left me salty. Which brings me to why I’m really about this class- I’m tired of expecting and being expected to expect learners to fit the magic classroom mould (that, in my opinion, not very many people actually fit in) and I’m excited to learn about the new technologies that will allow for flexible learning situations.
DL Student CommentsI also just want to share how weird and awesome I think it is that I can watch my professor in Victoria, guest lecturer Booth in Alberta, the slides for his talk, and take notes, and email my roommate a Depeche Mode video from YouTube, all from my kitchen in Montreal.
