A Year in Review
When I joined the Board in 2005, I never imagined that a year later I would become the Chair. Since 2006, I have beenhonoured to lead our dedicated, energetic board; one that hasevolved into a strong business-minded working group committedto raising the critical funds required for our programs andservices. I am delighted to report that over $990,000 was raisedthis past year to support the incredible work of Sheena’s Place.
2011 was an ambitiousyear at Sheena’s Place! We created an excitingStrategic Plan that willshift our dependenceaway from events to amore sustainable fundingmodel. Since the day weopened our doors in
October 1996, we have offered our services free of charge. Historically we have not receivedgovernment funding, nor are we a United Wayagency. We continue to rely on the proceeds ofspecial events and the generosity of you, ourindividual, corporate and foundation donors. Your incredible support has been an integral part of our ability to do our work, and even save lives.
Our mission has always been to provide services to people affected by eating disorders. This year, we re-worked our mission statement to truly reflectour focus and the programs we offer. We also built some new relationships in the mental healthcommunity that will be key to ensuring thecontinued good work done by all.
We are very excited about the launch of our two-year Expressive Arts Campaign led by ourHonorary Director Chair, Loretta Rogers. The
campaign is designed to sustain and expand ourexpressive arts groups. We are very grateful to theCommittee for their passion, their leadership andtheir determination to make a difference.
One of the paths to ensuring our success is a soundinfrastructure with the right tools in place. Thanksto the generosity of Scotiabank, our staff received a donation of new computer equipment, software, desks and cabinets. A strong, clearly articulatedbrand is also vital to having our message heard and our new Marketing and CommunicationsCommittee has started work in this area. Welaunched our Facebook page(facebook.com/sheenasplacetoronto) and our clients can now follow us on Twitter @sheenasplace.
Although I will remain on the Board for one moreyear to work on some special projects, this is myfinal one as Chair. My legacy is to leave Sheena’sPlace with an invigorated board that is stronglypositioned to serve the needs of our clients well into the future. I have enjoyed my journey and look forward to seeing Sheen’s Place grow andperhaps one day, offer our services nationally.

Expressive Arts Campaign
Expressive Arts support groups have been part ofour core program from the very beginning.
Facilitated by experienced arts therapists, our clientscan choose to express difficult emotions throughwriting, painting, drumming, drawing, andjournaling. Under the leadership of Campaign ChairLoretta Rogers, an artist in her own right, we initiateda two year Expressive Arts campaign with a goal of
$400,000 to sustain and expand our expressive artsgroups. Launched late in the year, with a lead gift of$50,000 annually for two years generously given byThe Rogers Foundation, we raised $184,000 by theend of 2011. Funding will enable Sheena’s Place toincrease the number of group sessions annually from238 to 356. We are very grateful to the CampaignCommittee for their passion and dedication.

Support Groups on CampusFor the first time, we took our helpbeyond our downtown location. Incollaboration with the University of
Toronto, Ryerson University, York University andSeneca College, we introduced a pilot offeringsupport groups for students on campus. These eightweek professionally facilitated groups were madepossible through funding from the Vital TorontoFund at the Toronto Community Foundation. Byproviding this improved access, we are bringingsupport closer to the student population. We are verygrateful to the Foundation for making this possible.

Joy and Sadness As I walk up the front steps to enter Sheena’s
Place, I know I am late for the Friday morningAdult Support Group, but I open the front door. I go up the creaky stairs to the third floor grouproom. I reach for the door and I enter. There arepeople sitting on the floor, in the chairs or on thesofas. Many are in the middle of a discussion. I find a seat and am asked if there is anything Iwant to say, and I say “Yes”. In this setting, you arewelcome to just sit there, or take part if you wantto. You can tell your stories or your experiences, tear up paper, shred Kleenex, smile, or just listen. In this group, there are people just new to Sheena’sPlace and others who have been here before. Thereis joy here. There is sadness here. Whether youcome late, or leave before the end of the session, you are welcome to be here. You matter. You areimportant. If the walls of the group room couldtalk, they would have so much to say!
Frances
My First TimeComing and just getting to Sheena’s Place was very difficult but there was nothing left to do and nowhere else to go. Opening the door andentering, I felt very anxious, ashamed, scared anduncomfortable. The staff made me feel normal, not like a person with an eating disorder. Being in a group session with strangers was uncomfortablebecause this is such a private battle. After the firsttime, I felt really drained because facing this monsteris an intense, life changing thing. I was glad the firstsession was over but at the same time I wanted to run away and never go back. Going back the secondtime was even harder but I forced myself to go.
By the third session, things got easier. I felt lessashamed, better, comfortable and more open toexpressing my feelings. Hearing someone next to me say thoughts that I had locked in my head isprofoundly healing. I felt less alone being aroundothers who understood. By hearing other people’sthoughts, it’s easier to be open. It’s an exchange oftrust. Attending the Friday morning support grouphas been the best experience for me and an integralpiece of recovery. It has truly changed my life.Sheena’s Place has helped guide me on my healingjourney. Sheena’s Place is an uplifting, hopeful place.

Friday Mornings
The Friday Morning Adult Support Group has been running since we opened our doors in 1996. Many people have come and gone through the years. Here are two personal stories.
Sheena’s Place 5
Hope and Support
The two questions everybody asks are: “how many people come here” and “how old are theparticipants?” The numbers always tell a story.
Our largest demographic - 46% - is the 20-29year old. This is reflected in the attendance of our Young Adult Support group, which expandedsuddenly and resulted in the addition of anothergroup. The wonder of Sheena’s Place is that we canmove quickly to provide support where it is neededmost. That is not the end of the numbers story.Media reports indicate a surge in older womenexperiencing symptoms in middle age. Our numbersshow that 11% of our clients are between the agesof 40 – 49, and 10% are over 50. Once again,Sheena’s Place is right there with our FabulousForties, Fifties and Forward support group.
In 2011, 969 people attended the 83 groups we offered. We helped 320 people through ourinformation sessions and experienced 155,196 visits to our website. Informational assistance is alsooffered at the busy front desk, via telephone, and e-mails. Clients can attend one of our free supportgroups within 72 hours without a referral. We arehere for our clients no matter how they seek our help.
Another question is: “how do you know thatSheena’s Place makes a difference?” In the fall, wepiloted new evaluation tools to measure participants’feelings, motivation, and the effectiveness of ourservices. Client satisfaction with our services is veryhigh and is correlated with being respectfully treatedand the sense of belonging that clients take awayfrom the Sheena’s Place experience.
Two innovative projects took our help beyond thewalls of 87 Spadina Rd. Through funding from CIBC,we launched an eLearning module for parents andsupportive others of people over age 18. Thisinformative guide serves as a starting point onsupporting a loved one. We intend to create a similarone for parents of younger children. Thanks to thegenerous support of the Toronto CommunityFoundation, we are collaborating on a pilot projectwith counsellors at Ryerson, Seneca, U of T and York, offering eight week support groups on campus.
Each year, our clients’ work is exhibited at theAnnual Expressive Arts show. Over 100 attendedour 13th show which featured multimedia workspresentations, including a play about eatingdisorders and video installations. We proudlydisplayed this beautiful work throughout Sheena’sPlace for all to see.
Offering our wonderful programs and keepingour doors open is the result of a tremendous groupeffort. I am privileged to work with dedicateddonors, committed volunteers, an engaged andinnovative board, and a remarkable staff team.

The Gift of Time
Our volunteers play an integral role in helping us to provide support services to our clients. Theyoffer greetings with a smile when someone comesthrough the doors to attend a group, or arrives atone of our fundraising events. They are the friendlyvoice on the other end of the phone offeringvaluable information and support to those in need. Many others generously commit their time to serveon event committees, work in the library, supportthe management of our databases, create compellingtestimonial videos and help set up for in-houseevents. They add so much to Sheena’s Place, not justin the work that they do, but also in the positiveenergy that they bring. We couldn’t do our workwithout them!
“I’m thrilled to contribute my time and resources to fundraise for Sheena’sPlace. It’s wonderful to know that we’re helping so many people affected byeating disorders.” - Dean Michel, Chair, Toronto Sun Golf Tournament
Valuable Experiences
As a teaching organization, Sheena’s Place offersplacements to university and college students from professional programs. In 2011, DanielleWoodcock, a second year student in the Master of Social Work Program at the University ofToronto, was placed with us.
This placement provided me with a wide array ofopportunities that assisted in broadening my skillsfor a career in social work. During my time here,I co-facilitated two support groups, worked at thefront desk answering phones and helping people, conducted interviews for those seeking moreinformation about groups, and participated in anumber of special events and health education fairs.
These valuable experiences helped to further myunderstanding of how eating disorders impact notonly individuals, but their families, and evencommunities. I saw first hand the tremendous effort it takes to ensure that those in need are able to access
the invaluable services offered at Sheena’s Place. I amvery grateful to have been involved with an agencydedicated to providing meaningful help to thoseaffected by eating disorders.
