We’re so pleased to announce that — during this past year — BC’s North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week was a huge success.
Let’s make this a yearly habit.
Habits, coincidently, are the ongoing theme for NAOSH Week BC 2015: “Make Safety a Habit.”
As 2015 participants consider how to incorporate this recurring theme into improving workplace health and safety, it’s worth remembering what we mean by “habits,” and how they can help or hinder injury prevention.
What is a habit?
A habit is very nebulously defined. I think we can all agree that a habit is anything you do regularly, but according to the definition we use in psychology, a habit also needs to be done automatically — as in, without really thinking about it … You see, all habits need a trigger — a little reminder that says “Hey, you should do this action now.” They also need a reward — a little reminder that what you just did was a good thing … Habits are hard.
Think about so many of the habits that you’ve formed, and then look around at the positive safety habits you see among your employees or colleagues, such as remembering to secure a seat belt before operating a forklift, or automatically donning personal protective equipment before entering a potentially hazardous area.
In fact, as your workplace gears up for the excitement leading to NAOSH Week, they’re given licence to reinforce those good practices — suddenly, they’re habituated!
That’s why this event can be such a powerful prevention tool, and why the number of employers taking part continues to grow.
Building on the successes of 2014
In looking ahead to NAOSH Week BC 2015, let’s look back at the strides we made in 2014.
Last year, NAOSH Week BC saw record growth and turnouts:
• The awards luncheon sold out, prompting the need for a new, larger venue.
• The BC launch event, held in Cloverdale May 5 last year, provided a fantastic kick-off to NAOSH Week BC 2014.
• The safety rodeo and trade show attracted and educated young and new workers across BC about the importance of protecting themselves against workplace injury and illness.
• An unparalleled number of organizations registered for participation in the event, leading to a record number of award applicants and an exceptionally high quality of award recipients.
Make safety a habit
This continuing trend of high-quality initiatives and submissions by BC organizations reflects the value of investing in NAOSH Week activities. It demonstrates BC’s important role within Canada to raise awareness of workplace health and safety and celebrate the success of prevention-minded employers.
As we look forward to NAOSH Week BC 2015, join us in making safety a habit, with the goal of fostering improvement in health and safety in workplaces throughout BC
The NAOSH Week Steering Committee of BC welcomes the opportunity to continue working closely with you on your innovative initiatives, and to honouring your efforts and achievements.

NAOSH Week — an overviewNorth American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week is an annual, continent-wide event involving employers, workers, and occupational health and safety specialists promoting injury and illness prevention in the workplace. NAOSH Week began in 1997 as a mutually agreed-upon, annual initiative between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Each country has since decided to dedicate the first week in May toward supporting — and recognizing — healthier, safer workplaces across North America.
If you’re an employer, NAOSH Week provides an excellent opportunity to focus, reinforce, and strengthen your organization’s commitment to occupational health and safety. Your NAOSH Week theme for 2015 is Safety & Health: Make Safety a Habit and takes place from Sunday, May 3 to Saturday, May 9.
Here’s what you can do during NAOSH Week to show your commitment to workplace health and safety:
• Register online to participate to ensure you receive useful resources, important updates, and a participation certificate.
• Hold activities and events.
• Attend the BC NAOSH Week Launch Event May 4.
• Apply for a BC NAOSH Week award.
• Attend the Safety Forum & Awards Luncheon in October 2015.
• Sponsor the BC NAOSH Week non-profit society
• Sign up for the BC NAOSH Week e-newsletter

The history of NAOSH WeekFrom 1986 to 1996, prior to the creation of NAOSH Week, the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) had observed Canadian Occupational Health and Safety (COHS) Week. During the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) talks, government labour representatives from Mexico, the United States, and Canada jointly discussed the role of workplace safety within the boundaries of all three nations. At that time, Canada’s representative brought up the subject of Canada’s COHS Week, and suggested his Mexican and American counterparts might wish to become involved in a similar endeavor.
Subsequently, these groups approached the CSSE for permission to expand the COHS Week experience to Mexico and the United States. In 1995, after many meetings between Labour Canada and the CSSE’s COHS Committee, a proposal was put forward to expand the COHS format into the North American arena. The CSSE Board of Directors formalized this proposal at its spring 1996 meeting. The CSSE decided to adopt the North American concept and implement it in place of the Canadian event.
Labour Canada then agreed to officially recognize the CSSE as the safety organization responsible for NAOSH Week. Labour Canada would also play the lead political role in overseeing the event in for North America for three years, after which there would be a review. The CSSE was then made responsible for all management, marketing, policy, and administration related to NAOSH Week, and was deemed the proprietor and governing body.
In September 1996, the agreement was taken to the NAFTA meeting and all parties agreed to the proposal. NAOSH Week was established. Between 1997 and 2000, NAOSH Week was implemented under this agreement.
Since 2000, the CSSE has retained responsibility for the management of NAOSH Week. The CSSE works hard to promote and encourage the goals of this event, in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety (CCOHS), the Labour Program of Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC), and national Canadian charity, the Threads of Life. In collaboration with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), NAOSH Week remains a truly continent-wide event.
The NAOSH Week logo incorporates three hands that form an equilateral triangle. This represents the three participating nations — Canada, the United States, and Mexico — and their cooperation and commitment to occupational health and safety. The three sides of the triangle stand for the partnership between all three countries, as well as all tripartite partnerships between business, labour, and governments. The connected hands illustrate assistance and cooperation on many levels — from interpersonal relationships in the workplace to the international exchange of ideas.
