• Discuss what is just over the horizon.

• Have fun!

Library Stories of 2014

Deep learning - brain-inspired systems capable of translating pixels into English.

Smart virtual personal assistants - semantic and natural language processing; data mined from our calendars, email, and contact lists; and the last few minutes of our behavior to anticipate the next 10 seconds of our thinking.

“It’s like Uber for ____” – the simple app connecting drivers to passengers is now worth more than Halliburton Corporation, Aetna, General Mills, Delta Airlines, Kraft Foods, and Charles Schwab.

Oversight for algorithms - Time to discuss how to include accountability systems for algorithms.

Data privacy - people are increasingly concerned about their privacy, and they’re pointing the finger at business, not maleficent hackers.

Block chain technology – the transaction database that’s shared by everyone participating in bitcoin’s digital system.

An intellectually refreshing list of technology trends to watch for in 2015

Truly Mind-blowing!

Mobile has won and is becoming modular!Streaming has won and vinyl still exists!

Does this matter to librarians?

Ownership vs. access

• Experiences are more important than ownership, right?

• Do e-books matter?

• Net Neutrality?

• Curation?

• Librarian role?

Will wearable computing really take off?

Most of the Pew Reports state that Americans value the role of libraries in

their communities, so I predict libraries will exist well into the future. ;)

Data theft/spying will get worse before it gets

any better!

What is the librarian’s role?

News alert! Makerspaces aren’t just about 3D printing!

DIG 2109/2000 (Digital Imaging Fundamentals) classes visited the

lab to learn about 3D printing. They were learning Adobe

Illustrator's 3D extruded visuals that week. More and more classes

are signing up!

The cool thing about Makerspaces is that you

will have a space to include interesting

technologies that are NOT even invented yet.

Perpetual Beta!

Are social networks REALLY about connecting with people? Are we presenting anything

meaningful or is the general public becoming mindless automatons reposting the “news” over

and over again? Are we being pulled into “like behavior?” Pretty soon we’ll have thought

bubbles floating over our head and there will be no mystery to our lives.

Gamifying our gaming club!

Offer more game development and computer programming/robotic workshops

Oh, and a drone workshop is coming soon!

It is nice to learn about this, but it can be stretching a bit to find a place in libraries for most of these products.
