Using SLO Results to Improve Student Learning
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES AT NOVA
The Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Student Success Initiatives is offering a three part series of workshops on SLOs at NOVA, open to all faculty and staff. The series will discuss the importance of SLOs at NOVA and provide information and practice on identifying and writing SLOs, selecting and designing assessment measures that provide useful results, gathering and summarizing results and using results to improve teaching and student learning. Faculty with and without SLOs assessment experience are encouraged to attend. This information is also applicable to developing and assessing course objectives.
The workshops give a comprehensive overview of the assessment process at NOVA. Session 1 focuses on writing program SLOs and mapping out where they are introduced, practiced and mastered by students in the course curriculum. Session 2 empowers programs and faculty with practical guidance in devising appropriate assessment measures. In Session 3, participants will learn how to use the data they gather to improve student learning.
If you have questions, please contact Dr. Daniel Gustav Anderson, Student Learning Outcomes Specialist, at dganderson@nvcc.edu or 703–503–6216.

Want to talk about teaching?
Join us for a cup of coffee and a fun discussion with faculty and staff.
Ted and Pedagogy: Conversations about Teaching and Learning
This series of one-hour conversations will focus on foundational attitudes and ideas that enhance our teaching and invigorate our students’ learning. Come share your experiences and leave feeling energized and inspired!
January: Mindset—The Power of Believing that You Can Improve Thursday, 1/19 from 11:00-12:00 PM in LC 215
Carol Dweck researches “growth mindset” — the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems. In this talk, she describes two ways to think about a problem that’s slightly too hard for you to solve. Are you not smart enough to solve it … or have you just not solved it yet? A great introduction to this influential field. Facilitators: Karen Doheney, English and Steve Clarke, English The first 18 participants can pick up a free copy of Carol Dweck’s book, Mindset!
February: Grit— The Power of Passion and Perseverance Tuesday, 2/21 from 1:00-2:00 PM in HEC 114
Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success. Facilitators: Laura Young, English, Joe Agnich, Math, and Cathy Hall, Outreach Coordinator
March: Let's Teach for Mastery—Not Test Scores Wednesday, March 1st from 12:30-1:30 PM in LC 215
Would you choose to build a house on top of an unfinished foundation? Of course not. Why, then, do we rush students through education when they haven't always grasped the basics? Yes, it's complicated, but educator Sal Khan shares his plan to turn struggling students into scholars by helping them master concepts at their own pace. Facilitators: Paula Rodgers, Biology and Jeremy Cooke, English
April: The World Needs All Kinds of Minds Tuesday, April 11th from 11:00-12:00 PM in LC215
Temple Grandin, diagnosed with autism as a child, talks about how her mind works -- sharing her ability to "think in pictures," which helps her solve problems that neurotypical brains might miss. She makes the case that the world needs people on the autism spectrum. Facilitator: Johanna Debrecht, Math This series is proudly brought to you by Loudoun’s Achieving the Dream Campus Team.
