SHIRLEYMORDINE(LegacyAward)ShirleyMordinebeganherearlytraininginSanFranciscowithWellandLathrop,AnnaHalprin,andtheSanFranciscoBalletSchool.SheperformedwiththeWellandLathropDanceCo.for10years.AftergraduatingfromMillsCollegeinOakland,California,shetaughtattheUniversityofMinnesotaforthreeyearsandcontinuedherstudieswithAlwinNikolaisandMurrayLouis.MovingtoChicagoin1969shefoundedTheDanceCenterofColumbiaCollegeChicagoanddirectedituntil1999.Underherdirection,TheDanceCenterevolvedintoamultifacetedinstitutionatthenationalforefrontofdanceeducationasateaching,learning,andperformingartscenter,anditspublicprogramminghasengageddiverse

companiesfromaroundtheworld.In1969MordinefoundedMordine&CompanyDanceTheater,theMidwest'slongest-runningcontemporarydancecompany,whichwillcelebrateits50thseasonbeginninginthespringof2019.Asthecompany’sArtisticDirector,MordinecreatedseveralseminalworksfortheChicagodancesceneincludingJourney,RSVP,andTongues.ShereceivedthefirstRuthPageAwardforOutstandingIndividualContributiontothefieldofdanceandwashonoredagainin1994withaRuthPageAwardforOutstandingArtisticAchievementforhergroundbreakingworkinchoreography.MordinecreatedthepreludeworkSubjecttoChangefortheDubufffetsculptureinthelandmarkDancin’intheStateeventattheStateofIllinoisBuildingin1993.ShealsocreatedtheChicagoMuseumofContemporaryArt’sfirstsite-specificworkinitsnewlocation,WeatherWatch.Shehasbeenaguestteacherinseveralcollegesanduniversitiesandin2002wasgivenTheRuthPageAwardforLifetimeAchievement.In2005shewasawardedagrantforchoreographyfromTheChicagoDanceMakersForumsupportedbytheChicagoCommunityTrust.Mostrecently,Mordinewastherecipientofa2017InternationalConnectionsgrantfromtheJohnD.andCatherineT.MacArthurFoundationtosupportaninternationalandculturalcollaborationwithHemaRajagopalanandAstadDabooinIndia.
