Enrichment of Learning
Prep Programs delivered within the school are to support student learning and provide students with an
opportunity to ‘strive for the peak’ throughout their school journey. Students participate in daily literacy and
numeracy lessons within busy classrooms where students are engaged in collaborative learning
experiences which are explicit, scaffolded and rich with language.
Programs and lessons covered include:
Jolly Phonics
Jolly Phonics is a fun child centred approach to teaching synthetic phonics.
There are actions for each of the 42 letter sounds and motivating lessons
for students to participate in. The letters are delivered into 7 distinct
groups to support the beginning stages of reading and writing.
In-class activities are daily.

read fluently. The Magic 100 words make up 50% of words that we
encounter when reading.
In Prep, students are expected to learn these Magic 100 Words.
Recognition of each word is to be automatic.

Students participate in reading lessons daily to develop the necessary skills
and strategies to become life-long readers. Students use their knowledge
and practice of Jolly Phonics to decode texts using strategies like Chunky

Fingergym
Fingergym is a fine motor school readiness program developed
to assist students in becoming independent in the classroom
through participating in fun and motivating activities. The
program encourages problem solving while developing
necessary skills required for schooling, while building
confidence.
Maths (hands on, problem solving…)
Within the Maths sessions, students participate in a variation of
lessons to enhance their skills in number and algebra,
measurement and geometry and statistics and probability which
all involve hands on activities and games.
Spelling Mastery
Spelling Mastery is a direct instruction program which enables
teachers to deliver interactive, structured lessons that help
students learn spelling skills through learning strategies, patterns
and rules. Students participate in these lessons 2x per week
starting at various stages throughout the year.
Caterpillar Handwriting
The story of ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ provides a context for
children to identify basic shapes that later become the
foundations of letter foundation. The learning process breaks
down the different skills into manageable chunks and scaffolding
the learning for students in fun and enjoyable context.
