Atomic Structure Notes

• The smallest part of a chemical element that has all the properties of that element is the atom.

• Everything in our world is made up of electrons, protons, and neutrons.

Practice

Nucleus • The nucleus is found in the center of the atom.

• It consists of protons and neutrons which are almost the same size because of the energy forces that act on them.

• The mass of the atom is made up of the mass of the proton and the neutron.

entire

if an atom was the size of a football stadium, then a proton would still be smaller than a marble.

Protons• All protons are exactly the

same and are found inside atoms. They have a positive charge

• Different atoms have different numbers of protons; what makes an atom be a helium or a gold atom depends on how many protons it has.

• The mass of the proton is equal to 1 atomic mass unit (amu)

an atom has equal numbers of protons

And electrons

Neutrons

• The neutron is a sub-atomic particle of the atom and is found in all elements except hydrogen. It has a neutral charge.

• The neutron and the proton make up the mass of the atom.

• Without the neutron, the protons would push away from each other.

Electrons• Electrons are found in clouds that

surround the nucleus of an atom. They have a negative charge

• Those clouds are specific distances away from the nucleus and are organized into shells.

• Because electrons move so quickly, it is impossible to see where they are at a specific moment in time.
