Project Due: April 12th

Main Function of the Respiratory System

Brings oxygen into the body and takes carbon dioxide out

Helps with smell

Main Parts of the Respiratory System

Lungs Diaphragm Trachea— AKA the windpipe Bronchial Tubes--- Bronchi

DSQ 54AREVIEW Main function of the Respiratory System Main parts of the Respiratory SystemOBJ To understand inhale & exhale To understand the 9 steps of the breathing

process To understand the parts of the right & left lungs To understand the job of the lungs

Inhale & Exhale

Inhale- the body automatically takes in fresh air

Exhale- the body automatically gets rid of carbon dioxide (CO2)

The medulla sends signals to the muscles to let air in & out of the lungs

***Medulla is in charge of all involuntary processes in the body

Steps In the Breathing Process

1. Nose & Mouth---Nasal Passage or Oral Cavity2. Throat---Pharynx3. Voice Box---Larynx4. Trachea---Windpipe (cilia help clean the air)

5. Bronchi---2 small pipes that branch off the trachea6. Bronchial Tubes---tubes throughout the lungs7. Alveoli---tiny air sacs that perform the main work of the

lungs8. Blood from the lungs is oxygenated---turns red9. Cells are brought oxygen---cells get oxygen from the blood

3-21-13 DSQ Quiz-correct Assign CH due Monday, March 25th REVIEW Main function of the Respiratory System Main parts of the Respiratory System 9 Steps in the Breathing Process To understand the parts of the right & left lungs

OBJ To understand the job of the lungs To look at breathing process cards

Function of the Lungs

The function of the lungs is to exchange gasses

As blood flows through the lungs it picks up oxygen from the air & releases carbon dioxide

The body needs oxygen from blood & it produces carbon dioxide as a waste product

Location of the Lungs

The lungs drop down & are separated from the abdomen (stomach/digestive parts) by the diaphragm-a muscle

Between the lungs lie the esophagus, heart, and large blood vessels

Visceral Pleura

Your lungs are coated with a substance that makes the lungs slide past the ribs without sticking, called the visceral pleura

The space between the lungs and ribs is called the Pleura Space or Pleura Cavity

Visceral Pleura

4-2-13 DSQ 56B “Current Health” due Wednesday, April 3rd Correct WS-Lungs Project QuestionsREVIEW The Main function of the Respiratory System The Main parts of the Respiratory System 9 Steps in the Breathing Process Lungs

OBJ Breathing Process Cards-checked (5B) To understand the alveoli & how they work To understand how the diaphragm works Assign Worksheet

Alveoli

The lungs are filled with millions of tiny air chambers called alveoli

Cannot see the alveoli with the naked eye

If you could spread all the alveoli out---they would cover a half a tennis court

Picture of the Alveoli

The Exchange of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide

Diaphragm

A U-shaped muscle that helps with breathing

When you inhale the diaphragm goes down. When you exhale it goes up

4-3-13 DSQ 57B-Quiz Questions Correct & Assign “Current Health” due Monday April 8th Correct 1 WS-score Project Questions Thursday, April 11th Test Friday, April 12thREVIEW The Main function of the Respiratory System The Main parts of the Respiratory System 9 Steps in the Breathing Process LungsOBJ To understand how to break down the breathing process Assign Worksheets

The Breathing Process Broken Down

Air enters the mouth or nose---air is moistened Air now enters the pharynx (curved part of

throat). The curvature helps clean the air Air now goes past the larynx or voice box Air now enters the trachea—or windpipe—at

the end it branches into two smaller tubes

The Process…continued

Air enters the bronchial tree system---the bronchi

Air then goes to the bronchial tubes Air then enters the alveoli Oxygen is exchanged into the blood at the

alveoli Cells receive oxygen by way of the blood
