• Your problem statement related to your research• The impact and the benefits and impact this research

has for the public, especially if they have helped pay for it.

• Your ability to communicate to intelligent people outside of your area of study.

• Using language that is jargon-free and understandable• Helping you in other professional arenas including job

interviews.• Having fun through it all!!!!

WHAT NOT TO DO

• No costumes or props• No slide transitions• Avoid Muttering or “ums, “ahs,” and “ers”• No looking at the floor • Avoid sex, religion, or politics• No hands in your pockets or hypergesticulation

You’ve only got three minutes – make every second count!

PRESENTATION SUCCESS

• Simple– “The purpose of my research is…” – Why did I start this research?

• Unexpected– Tell us something interesting about your research

• Concrete– Is there a visual metaphor to capture the essence

• Credible• Emotional

– Can you link your research to a human interest element, current issues or self-interest of the audience?

• What’s in it for me?• Oh, how sad!

– Convey passion for your work

• Story– Can you use a story to build curiosity about your research, with

• characters, • a beginning, middle, and end, and • a change/transformation
