Inconsistency not much to crow aboutRebecca WilliamsADELAIDE coach Neil Craig
last night blamed his team’slack of consistency after theCrows surrendered a strongstart to suffer a two-point lossto St Kilda at Telstra Dome.
Craig lamented the team’sup-and-down form after theCrows were forced to fight outthe last three quarters, afterthey dominated the openingterm.
‘‘We still wear that (inconsis-tent) tag,’’ Craig said.
‘‘That’s taking nothing awayfrom St Kilda. You can evenargue tonight within the game,I thought we played really well
the first quarter, poor secondquarter and a bit of an arm-wrestle in the second half.
‘‘If you go back to last week’sgame as a benchmark game( 7 1 - p o i n t w i n a g a i n s tHawthorn) that we would belooking at, we were a fair wayoff that.’’
Adelaide was dealt an injuryblow when key defender BenRutten was unable to return tothe field after halftime after hesuffered a corked calf.
The loss meant the Crows
had to swing forward KenMcGregor into defence to manFraser Gehrig, who finishedwith four goals.
Craig was unsure of theextent of Rutten’s injury, butsaid his loss had hurt theCrows badly.
‘‘It hurts us up forward whenwe had to take Ken McGregorout of our forward line,’’ hesaid.
‘‘One of the things that Kendoes when he is there, he isvery good in the air and hestraightens us up, and Ithought we started to go a bitwide and we were very hesi-
tant going into our forwardline, but we had no choice.
‘‘In the end, we got caughtone big man short.’’
While the loss leaves theCrows fighting for their placein the top eight, Craig wasconfident their season was stillalive.
The Crows were in sixthposition after last night’sgame, on the same points asthe Western Bulldogs (sev-enth) and Essendon (eighth).
‘‘Our season is still alive,’’Craig said.
‘‘The teams we play for therest of the year are all pretty
much after our spot, so we arefighting in a big pack there.
‘‘But we are still alive and wehave an opportunity to createour own destiny. So we pushon with an aim to play betterfootball than we did tonight.’’
Captain Mark Ricciutoinjured his ankle in the firstterm, but he returned to kicktwo goals in a performanceCraig praised.
‘‘When he first did it he waspretty sore and then it settleddown, so he was still able tocontribute,’’ he said.
‘‘It was a pretty good effortby Mark.’’
