Juror Statement

What an honor and genuine pleasure to serve as the juror for this remarkable annual exhibition, in this most unusual year. Coming into it, none of us knew what to expect. Would the months

less eager to share? Were artists perfecting their techniques or experimenting with wild abandon? Embracing the solitude and taking the long inner journey, or devoting themselves to the volatile state of the world? Were folks angered or anxious or feeling urgent, or had their art offered an oasis, a serenity, a fantasy, or an escape to beauty which we too might access?

After careful consideration, I realized that the answer is, yes.

Across all the selections, with its array of mediums and styles, what I perceive from this talented group of artists is a navigation between and among all of it, and more, and sometimes all at

the winners and honorable mentions -- in terms of the portraiture and landscape variations.

Perhaps it makes sense that artists would feel called to contemplate themselves, Proust-like, from a sense of solitude and longing, and the strange way in which our solitude became itself a profound shared experience. In the wave of demonstrations for justice, we were asked to see one another more clearly as well, to step outside our own perspectives and to analyze society by other metrics. All three of the winners are portraits. I felt strongly that it was this impulse to more clearly see ourselves and others which

Our recourse to nature in our lives and metaphors, bodies and souls, spirit and science also resonates in the context of the pandemic and its follow-on psycho-societal phenomena. The natural world and the intrusions of the built environment provide

metaphors for emotional and psychological states. All of the honorable mentions engage in diverse, exciting ways with the human presence with regard to technology, architecture, ecology, and natural history.

Taken as a group, it is my hope that the sweep of the exhibition yields not only an eclectic snapshot of this moment in Houston’s visual culture, but as well, a singular exhibition that coheres like symphony to yield a richly textured sense of the creative response to these very, as the saying goes, interesting times.
