OnJan.5,2013,4LuvofDogRescuewasintroducedtofivenewfriends—Mohawk,Spike,Gizmo,GladysandIvy.Thesefivelittlepugpuppies(puglets,ifwemay)wereallsufferingfromdemo-decticmange,andunfortunatelytheirbreedercouldnotaffordthecostsoftheirtreatment.Theywerebroughtto4LuvofDogRescue,andwewerehappytotakecareofthem.

Asmanydogloversmayalreadyknow,mangeisaskindiseasebroughtonbytheoverpopulationofparasiticmites.Thepresenceofsuchmitesonahouseholdpetis

extremelycommon–theyliveinthehairfolliclesofmostdogswithoutanyissues.Itishowever,whenadog’simmunesystembecomescompromised,duetoillness,un-healthylivingsituations,stressorthelike,thatthesemitesareabletomultiplyinlargenumbers,result-inginmange.Symptomstypicallyappearaboutaweekafteronsetandcanincludehairloss,baldspots,scabbing,sores,intenseitch-ingandevenlossofappetite.Leftuntreated,mangecanevenbecomelifethreatening.Whenthepugletscametous,mostoftheirfurwasmissing.LuckilyforMohawk,Ivyandtheirsiblings,wewereable

totreattheirmangeandgettheirglossycoatsback.

Tobegin,itwasofftothevet.Thepupswerethenprescribedadailyoralmedicine,specialshampooandfrequentbaths.Soonafterwebegantheirtreatmentplan,theyre-spondedandhavebeenimprovinginleapsandboundssince.Resultswereseeninaslittleasaweek’stime!They’vebeentakentothevetforcheckupsevery30daystomarktheirprogress.

Continued from page 1ofcourse.Assoonastheirstorywasmadepublicandtheirpicturespostedtotherescue’sFacebookpage,supportcamerushingin!TheBarktasticFour,agroupdevotedtoorganizingcharityauctionstobenefitrescuepets,heldanauc-tioninhonorofthepuglets,rais-ingmorethan$900tohelpwiththeirtreatment.Andofcoursenoonecouldresisttheurgetotakethemhomeafteronelookattheir(mange-free)faces.They’veallbeenadoptednowandarejusttakingtimetogetadjustedtotheirnewhomes.Thepugsarestilltak-ingtheirmedication,justtostayonthesafeside,butshouldallbedonewithitquitesoon.

Itisimportanttoknowthatmangecanbeeasilytreated—itjusttakes

time,patienceandsometimesalittleexpense.Forthosewhosebelovedpetmayhavemange,butknowthecostoftreatmentwouldbechallenging,thereareafewhomeremediesthatcanbetried.Butwealwaysrecommendgoingtothevetfirsttodeterminetheskincondition.Thefollowinghometreatmentsarethosewithwhichpeoplehaveseenmostsuccess:

•Bathethepupwithamixtureofhydrogenperoxideandborax.Use1to2tablespoonsofboraxforev-ery500ccof1%hydrogenperox-ide,makingsurethatitthoroughlydissolves.Coverthedog’sfurwiththesolution(donotgetitintheeyesormouth).Letitdrynaturallysothatitcanbeabsorbedbytheskin.Trythisonceaweek,butfornolongerthanatwo-monthperiod.-Intheearlystagesofmitesafewdropsofoliveoilappliedtothemangypatchescanhelpsoothetheirritationandkillthemites.•Washyourdog’sbeddingfre-quentlyandkeephis/herlivingareaassterileaspossibleuntilhe/sherecovers.•Bathandbrushyourdogregular-lytohelpremovescalesandscabs.•Dietarysupplementscanassistwithhealing.SupplementsthatcanhelpimproveskinconditionsincludevitaminE,vitaminCandfishoil.

Ifyourpupdoesnotrespondtotreatment,youshouldtakehimtothevettogetmedicationthatcanhelpgetridofthemangeandputthatpepbackinyourpup’sstep.

B-BreathingIfyouhaveacatoradogwithasnoutsmallenoughtocompletelyfitinyourmouth,enclosetheentiremouthandnoseareawithinyourmouth.Ifyourdog’ssnoutwon’tfitinyourmouth,holdhismouthclosedandputyourmouthoverhisnose.Exhaleandwatchforthechesttorise.

C-Circulation Feelforyourpet’sheartbeat.Youwillwanttofeelaroundwheretheleftelbowtouchesthechest.Don’tassumethathishearthasstoppedwhenhe’snotbreathing.Ifyourpetisconsciousandrespondingtoyou,hisheartisbeating.Performchestcompressionsonlywhenthereisnoheartbeat.

testing,butactuallyitisacombi-nationoftests.OfcourseittestsforHeartworm,butalsoErluichia,LymeandAnaplasma.Huh,yousay?Well,letmeexplain…HeartwormDiseaseiscarriedbymosquitoesandtransmittedthroughbites.Apositiveheart-wormtestindicatesthepres-enceofwormswithinthedog’sheart.Heartwormdiseaseisverydangerous,withthewormscaus-ingseriouscardiovascularandpulmonarydisease.Treatmentistypicallyabout$400to$600-plusandmustbecarriedoutoverasix-monthperiodtodecreasetheriskofcomplicationsfromkillingtheworms.Preventivedrugsarehighlyeffective,andwhenregularlyad-ministered,willprotectmorethan99percentofdogsandcatsfromheartworm.Mostcompromisesinprotectionresultfromfailuretoproperlyadministerthedrugsdur-
