A Bit of Baldrige History Mid-1980’s, U.S. companies needed to focus on improving
quality of products to compete in an ever-expanding, competitive and demanding global market.
Then, Secretary of Commerce Malcolm Baldrige, an advocate of quality management, as a key to U.S. prosperity and sustainability. Congress named the Award in recognition of his contributions.
The goal of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Improvement Act of 1987 was to enhance the competitiveness of U.S. businesses. It expanded to healthcare and education organizations (in 1999) and to nonprofit/government organizations (in 2007).
Congress created the Award Program to:– identify and recognize role-model businesses– establish criteria for evaluating improvement efforts– disseminate and share best practices

# 1 – Use It To Improve Financial Performance The Malcolm Baldrige National
Quality Award and the Baldrige Award recipients constitute the most visible aspects of the Baldrige Program.
The 99 Baldrige Award winners (including 6 two-time winners) serve as national role models for U.S. organizations.
For the two-time winners, median growth in jobs was 65.5%.
By comparison, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, average growth in jobs was 2.5% for a matched set of industries and time periods for each recipient.

Results of Baldrige
The ratio of the Baldrige Program’s benefits for the U.S. economy to its costs was estimated at 820 to I in
a December 2011 study.
Previously, a October 2011 study had conservatively estimated the net private benefits associated with the program to the economy as a whole at $24.65 billion.
When compared to the social costs of the program of $119 million, the Baldrige Program’s social benefit-to-
cost ratio was then 207 to 1.
