For 10,000 years, its lush, sheltered harbour, nestled in the Great
Bear Rainorest, has been the ancestral home o the Tsimshian
First Nations, who created stately post-and-beam cedar houses,
magnifcent sea-going canoes, intricate jewelry and towering totem
poles. The classic art o these ancient Northwest Coast cultures,
amous around the world, is very much alive here today.
Bountiul salmon has long provided a rich source o ood and trade
or the indigenous peoples, and later or dozens o cannery villages
dotting the coast to harvest the rich salmon runs o the Skeena and
Nass rivers. The abundance o resh halibut made Prince Rupert
the “Halibut Capital o the World”. Fishing or salmon, halibut and
Dungeness crab continues to be a way o lie, and a mouth-watering
lure or visitors to indulge in incredibly resh, succulent seaood.
