Blackfigure vase painting was popular from around 700 to 530 BC and marks the great age of Greek Art.

The decoration appears as black silhouettes painted on a reddishorange background.  Blackfigure pottery puts an emphasis on pictorial subjects: scenes from everyday life.

Blackfigure vase painting was done with only one type of clay.  The clay looked black when wet, but when fired in an oven with plenty of oxygen, it turned red.  This limited the colors they could use to only black and red.

The blackfigure painting style replaced the Geometric style that had gone before it and by the 5th century, blackfigure painting was overshadowed by redfigured painting.

Let's say I want my pictorial scene to include my love of

golfing...how am I going to draw

that with just a Sharpie???

Now, it is in

silhouette!

First, I need a "gesture drawing"...

Then, I'll thicken it up, add some details and fill it in with black.
