Observations/NotesbyRyanWalker:

October14,2001.Westartedpre-dawninthedarkwiththeleadswimmer(BrettGravlin)jumpinginfromthebeachatIdealandfollowingglowsticksonthepaddleboardsofthepaddlers.Bravedude.Therewere3paddlersinthewater,inadditiontothetwosupportboats.(KimMusch,BrianRaffertyandJamesJones)assafetyescorts.Thefirst3,30minutelegswereinthedarktodawnperiod.IwasoneofthedarkswimmersanditwasSCARY!Theoceanwascalmwithminimalcurrents.AsweapproachedMontereysomeswellsbeganformingwiththeafternoonwindanditwasabitrougher.Beachingwastricky,butweallhadbodysurfingexperience,sothesandbreakdidn'tcrunchustoobad.Ididnotseeanywhales,buttherewasalotofmarinelife.Wesaw2massivesunfish,tonsofjellies(aliteral"field"ofthem)about3/4ofamileofftheMontereycoast.Painfullastmilewiththestings.Iwasbuzzedbyasealionaboutmid-bay,whichscaredthebejesusoutofme.Someflyingfish.That'sallIcanremembernow.Nosharksightings.Itwasquitecoldthatday.52-54dependingonlocation.ThefinalswimmerwasjoinedbytherestoftheteamastheyallswamceremoniouslytothebeachinMontereyforthefinishtogether.
