change of state

description

melting solid liquid

freezing liquid solid

vaporization liquid gas

evaporation • type of vaporization • takes place only on surface of liquid

boiling • type of vaporization• takes place throughout liquid

condensation gas liquid

sublimation solid gas

melting • solid liquid

• thermal energy added particles move faster

melting point• specific temp. @

which substance melts

• melting point of pure water = 0oC

• characteristic property

freezing

• liquid solid

• opposite of melting

vaporization

• liquid gas

• thermal energy added particles move faster

• 2 types:

1. evaporation

2. boiling

boiling

• liquid gas

boiling point

• temp. @ which liquid boils

• used to identify unknown substances

evaporation• liquid gas

condensation

•opposite of vaporization

•when particles in a gas lose enough energy to become a liquid

sublimation• change of state from solid directly gas

dry ice = solid carbon dioxide
