1824 ELECTION

1)1824 Election William H. Crawford, Andrew Jackson, and John Quincy Adams ran for President of the U.S. No candidate received a majority of the electoral vote and according to the 25th amendment if no candidate received a majority than the House of Representatives choose who would be President. John Quincy Adams make a deal with Henry Clay the Speaker of the House to win the Election and become the 6th President of the United States.

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS

2)Adams wanted a strong navy, more government funding of science and the government to direct economic growth. Which scared members of Congress who wanted more limited government. Congress turned down most of Adamʼs ideas.

1828 ELECTION

3)The election of 1828 there were two parties Democratic - Republicans who backed Andrew Jackson. National Republicans who supported John Quincy Adams. During the campaign both parties resorted to mudslinging - attempts to ruin their opponentʼs reputation.

ANDREW JACKSON

4)Andrew Jackson won by a landslide and became the 7th President of the U.S.

SPOIL SYSTEM

5)Jackson used the spoil system. He fired many federal employees and replaced them with people who had supported him.

INDIAN REMOVAL ACT OF 1830

6)Indian Removal Act of 1830 - Jackson ordered the removal of all Native American Tribes in the East and South East to Indian Territory. He sent representatives to negotiate treaties and transfer of land. The majority of the people in the Tribes did not want to leave their homeland.

TRAIL OF TEARS

7)The Cherokee Nation had a very tough relocation to Indian Territory. It is known as the Trail of Tears many Cherokees died on the trail.

1832 ELECTION

8)In 1832 Election the Bank of the United States played a big role. Jackson thought the Bank was unconstitutional. He vetoed the banks charter and received popular support from the public. He defeated Henry Clay for President.

MARTIN VAN BUREN

9)Martin Van Buren who was Jacksonʼs Vice President became the 8th President in 1836.

THE PANIC OF 1837

10) The Panic of 1837 - land values went down, prices for goods went up, and cotton prices hit an all time low. Thousands of banks and business went under. Hundreds of Thousands of people lost their jobs.
