Idea

Create a novel health education curriculum for the parents of students at Global Scholars Academy

Global Scholars Academy

• A public charter school in downtown Durham serving students of color who have significant socioeconomic and academic challenges

• Strives to improve educational outcomes and and life chances of youth at greatest risk of academic failure

• Currently, health and wellness is emphasized at the school with students directly

• Need for raising health awareness with students’ parents so that the home environment also promotes healthy living

Topics discussed during the monthly parent’s night for 20-30 min sessions “Hygiene” “Nutrition” “Flu” “Bullying” “Mental Health”

Each session accompanied by food/refreshments and door prizes Smoothie sampling, groceries, healthy dinner Thermometers, cough drops, hand sanitizer, tissues Children’s stories, activity books, pens, stickers
