A day in the life ofAlexis

Alexis climbs the ladder to his house

to drop off the wood he has

collected.

If his family have enough food that day, he will eat a little before going to school, which starts at 7:30am.

Alexis’ classroom

Alexis’ teacher is called Genaro Antonio

Alexis is taught maths, Spanish, natural

sciences and social sciences.

He also does physical education and art and

learns about the culture of his tribe –

the Emberá.

After his early start Alexis may have a rest.

He also has to help his big sister, by looking after his nephew.

Emberá tattoos

The tattoo dye is made from the jagua fruit.

Some of the Emberá women covered in the symbolic body art.

They apply the dye with a used corn cob.

Criseria weaves a basket

Criseria starts off with some long reeds.

She weaves them together to start creating a basket.

The basket is almost finished.

Criseria makes the finishing touches to her basket.

Larger baskets are made and used for storing things.
