2014 board of directors
a place to call homeFor nearly 100 years, Emma Norton Services has provided our community with safe, affordable housing. Today, as over 10,000 people find themselves homeless every night in Minnesota, our programs are more critical than ever. Every woman and family that walks through our doors is able to access a whole array of services designed to help them get back on their feet and work towards independence. But they often find something else here. They find a community. They find self-acceptance. They find joy. They find a place to call home.
letter from the president
I work with a company that describes every person
as “whole, complete and perfect.” As human
beings, we all have struggles we are dealing with.
“Whole, complete and perfect” means we have
within us the capacity to deal with those struggles
in our lives and to make a difference in the lives of
others. And, even when we are “whole, complete,
and perfect,” having a support system around us
helps us see things we cannot see and gives us
tools for growing and developing.
Dear Friends,
The clients at Emma Norton Services (ENS) are also “whole, complete, and perfect.” They have within themselves to the resources they need to address what they are dealing with, whether it be substance abuse, homelessness, or mental health.
Emma Norton Services is their support system, helping them see their gifts as well as the blind spots that may interfere with their growing and developing into independent women who can share their lives with their communities.
I want to personally thank each and every one of our donors and volunteers for your support. We literally would not be here, nor could we provide these tools for growth and development, without your contributions of time and money.
If you have heard any of the residents at Emma Norton Residence or Emma’s Place speak about their experiences, you know that your support makes a difference!
2014 has been an exciting year, filled with changes, transitions, surprises, and opportunities. The first change came in mid-January with Tonya
Brownlow taking the position of Executive Director. Tonya definitely hit the ground running, getting acquainted with all the workings of ENS and comparing them with what she knew about best practices in each area.
The Board of Directors spent much of this year working on streamlining our systems so we could work more effectively. This included updating the bylaws, creating new committees, and outlining new communication procedures so that all board members are fully informed about committee discussions and actions.
It really does take a team for Emma Norton Services to function effectively, and I want to take this opportunity to thank the staff, the Board of Directors, and all of you who have contributed in any way to ENS for all you do!
Gratefully,
Barbara Moore 2014 Board President

Emma Norton Residence is a transitional
housing program located in St. Paul that
specializes in serving individual women who
are homeless and dealing with either mental
illness, chemical dependency recovery, or
both. Due to the large number of women with
these specific needs, Emma Norton Residence
is an integral part of the social services
system in Ramsey County. Intensive chemical
and mental health services are necessary
to achieve the best possible outcomes of
lasting stability in housing, employment, and
financial self-sufficiency.
Emma’s Place, located in Maplewood, has
thirteen townhouse units and provides
permanent affordable supportive housing
for single-parent families with three or more
children who were formerly homeless. All of
the families include one or more members
who are in recovery from either drug or
alcohol addiction, mental illness or both.
Typically, there are between 60-80 children,
ages newborn to 18, living at Emma’s Place.
Emma’s Place is one of the few organizations
in Minnesota that offers affordable housing
and support for large families.
‘I realized I had a lot of support here at
ENR. Many women came to me saying
that they accepted me for who I am and
supported me. That is something I have
been waiting my whole life to hear. I
thought I was all alone, and now I see
that there was all this support in front of
me the whole time.’
ENR Resident
‘Everything I had on my list of
goals when I came here is slowly
being checked off. It’s such a
good feeling! Everything I messed
up for the past 5 years is slowly
coming together and I feel good
about it.’

Emma’s place has been such a help to me. I’m a single
mom with five kids and I’ve had to struggle. I was basi-
cally homeless and staying with my sister temporarily. Em-
ma’s Place is a gift. I get a lot of help from the people here.
I’ve been getting one on one assistance with a case worker
and got help with my kids’ schooling. My children get after
school programs, help with their homework, activities, field
trips. I thank God for it. This is somewhere you can gain and
go forward, and you have nothing to lose.

Being in my own space again gives me a lot of calm.
I was thinking today about when I first moved
into Emma’s, how scared I was. How hopeless. I was
telling myself ‘I will never be able to live alone again’
because my addiction was so bad. I never dreamed
I’d be on my own. But I’ve been in my apartment two
months now. I’m staying sober, I’m keeping up with
my ARMHS appointments, I see my psychiatrist, I see
my therapist. I’m able to maintain all that and I’m
still getting A’s in school.”

LaShawnda, grade 7, arrived at Emma’s Place early last year frustrated and
struggling to bring her grades up before the end of the school year. She had
several missing assignments and her grades floated between Fs and Ds.
During the school year, LaShawnda began participating in Emma’s Place youth
programming. After meeting with our staff in one-on-one academic support
sessions, she took initiative to review her missing school work, set concrete
goals for each week, and reflected on her progress. She completed many of the
missing assignments for her classes and retook tests to achieve much better
scores.
As a result, her grades in Science and Math have jumped from “Fs” to solid “Bs,”
and LaShawnda finished the school year with her highest GPA ever.
