Asthma is one of the most commonlong term conditions in the UK, affecting5.4 million people, of which 1.1 million arechildren. Asthma is the most commonlong-term medical condition for children.

Caring for people who experiencean asthma attack costs 3.5 times more than caring for those whose asthma is well managed.

Most patients can achieve effective control of their asthma in partnership with primary care.

Many children with asthma have poor control of their condition, often as a consequence of poor compliance with therapy.

On average 3 people per day or1 person every 8 hours dies from asthma in the UK

There were 80,000 emergencyhospital admissions for asthma inthe UK in 2008-09. Of these, 30,000were children under 14;

• The main goal was to lessen the burden of asthma on individuals and society.

• The number of hospital days and disability due to asthma fell 70–90% during the period from 1994 to 2010.

• In 2012 – there were no adult of paediatric deaths directly attributable to asthma.
