A Representation of myPublic and Private Selves

by Benjamin Jaekle

My Onion

Hey there!

I’m Benjamin Jaekle, and this is a presentationabout my public and private selves.

This is an Onion, which is a great metaphor for dealingwith how people present themselves interpersonally.

Benjamin has obtained an Onion!

Onions are made of layers that can be peeled away, just like the information we make available to others.

The deeper we go into the Onion of my personality, the more intimate the information we see.

My public self is comprised largely of the outer layers. My private self is comprised mainly of the inner layers.

Public Private

So why don’t we start by taking a closerlook at the outer layer of this little dude?

Pretty basic stuff on the outside. Male, 27 years old, white, geeky, studying game design, dashingly

handsome.

Benjamin inspects Onion!

You can get deeper than that pretty easily with my public self. Let’s peel a layer or two real quick and try again.

Benjamin peels Onion!

Now we see that I’m into rock and hiking, that I love to read, that I love to be outside or in front of a

computer.

Click to hear oneof my favorite songs:

Benjamin inspects Onion again!

And look: here are my loves of wine and chiptunes, my preference for fall, and my fascination with Asian culture!

Click to hear one ofmy favorite chiptunes:

My public self is pretty broad. You don’t really miss much,

but there are bits of my self that I keep hidden away.

Let’s hack this Onion open and checkout my deeper private self.

Watch your eyes.Onion juice stings!

Benjamin chops Onion!

HI-YA!

Now we can easily see my private self inside. These juicy

bits here make me tick, but you might not ever see them.

Benjamin has obtained ½ an Onion!

Let’s take a quick look – this is still my privateself, after all, so I can’t give you the full tour!

My private self includes items of my personality like myvalues, my religious agnosticism, and my fear of water.

Public me is humorous and excitable, but I also have a lot of passion and thoughtfulness that aren’t evident to

most.

There’s some other stuff in here, too. Fears, anxieties, selfish things, desperate desires and so forth.

I don’t think we know each other well enough, though. That’s part of knowing how much of myself to reveal.

Anyway, that’s about all I can tellyou about my Onion for now.

I hope this presentation has allowed you to get to knowme a little better, at least as far as our relationship

allows.

Maybe you’ll get to know me a little better someday!

Thanks for clicking along.Hope you have a great day!

Only one Onion was harmed during the making of this

presentation. It’s in a stir-fry now, though, so it’s all good.

Photos, artwork, and screenshots are all of my own creation (except the one of the stairs, which

was pulled from Google Image Search).

This presentation was assembled using PowerPoint for Mac 2008.
