To establish an Endowment fund committed to supporting the educational needs of Al-Rahmah School & Al-Rahmah Nursery

Definitions

• Endowment: A gift that provides an income for an institution / person for a specific objective

• Waqf (Trust): Entrusted property for the good of mankind

• Mutawali (Trustee): Person(s) who manage(s) the trust

First Waqf was the land for Masjid Nabawi owned by two orphans

Objectives

• Invest Islamically under professional management

• Preservation of capital is key to endowment success

• Investments will not be touched for first 5 years

• Use of a percentage of profit to fund activities

• Re-investment of a percentage of profit to strengthen future growth

A S E T Structure

• 12 member Board of Trustees

• Comprise respected members of the Community

• Diverse backgrounds and Professional Experience

• Trust Members will serve as volunteers for a 6 year term with staggered 3 and 4 year terms

Function of Trustees

• To act as a fiduciary of funds

• To provide governance and leadership

• To make decisions on use of funds for school using trust guidelines

• To Solicit donors & Raise Funds

• Yale Investment Management Committee est. in 1975, endowment value $22.5b – year 2007

• Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Endowment Fund est. in 1996 raised $1.9m by 2007

• McDonough School, $50mil raised between 2005 to 2007

• Gilman School expects to spend $3.5 mil from its Endowment 2007-2008

• Educational needs of Al-Rahmah school and Nursery.

• Funds for essential capital equipment and buildings.

• Positions for teachers that are guaranteed and not subject to the fluctuations in tuitions and the economy.

• Funds for visiting teachers, speakers and seminars to enrich the curriculum
