Purpose of Presentation Aids To reinforce your key points To support your main ideas To summarize your thoughts To list complex points into key phrases

Do not type your speech verbatim on your presentation aid and read directly to your audience!

Keep It Simple

Type in phrases, not sentences Minimize the number of words used Use active verbs Use parallel grammatical structure Repeat key terms for consistency Number sequential items

Create Continuity

Use the same design elements consistently.

Use one PowerPoint slide design throughout entire show.

Use the same colors, fonts, and styling through out.

Place repeating elements in the same place on subsequent aids.

Presentation Software

PowerPoint is the most popular, and is probably available on campus computers.

Some web-based tools are Google Does Presentation and Zoho Show.

Use a computer, projector, and panel screen to display your slide show.

Preloaded templates assist you with design elements.

Give a Speech

Give a speech, not a slideshow! Spend more time on writing and practicing

your speech than on making a flashy slideshow!

Technical problems may make it impossible for you to show your slides.

Your slideshow is not a crutch!

Avoiding Technical Glitches

Verify the computer operating system is compatible with your slideshow in advance.

Properly save the files into the same folder and on the disk/flash drive you’ll use during your speech.

Verify that your files can be opened on the presentation computer.

Practice using the speaking location computer in advance.

Prepare a paper copy of slides in case of power failure.

Creating Your Slideshow

AutoContent Wizard can set up your slideshow for different presentation contexts.

The Design Template option provides predesigned templates.

Selecting Blank Presentation mode allows you to personally design every aspect of your slide design.

These lecture slides were created using a Customized Design Template by altering the color scheme of a Microsoft template.

Other templates can be downloaded from the web.

Steps for Creating Slide Show

STEP 1: Finish your speaking outline.STEP 2: Choose the design template for your

slide show.STEP 3: Select your color scheme for your slides.STEP 4: Create a slide for each outline section.STEP 5: Select the slide layout appropriate for

each slide.STEP 6: Add photos, clip art, or charts as needed.STEP 7: Add audio, video, or website links as

needed.STEP 8: Using slideshow view to practice.

Slide Layout

Use the predesigned slide layout feature to add text, clip art, charts, photos, or audio/video clips.

Scroll over the six options in the slide icon on the left side of your screen to choose your feature.

Adding Audio/Video Clips

Audio/Video Clips are links embedded in your slide, not permanent elements. If you don’t have Internet access at your speaking location, the link won’t work.

Video clips can be found at www.youtube.com, video.google.com, from sponsoring organization websites, or from your own personal files.

Audio clips can be found at www.iTunes.com, www.freeaudioclips.com, and other websites.

Remember the length of the clip you use will impact overall time of your speech.

Transitions & Animation

Add motion, or animation, to your text. Add sound effects to your text. Choose slow movement options. Use the same animation for each slide or not

at all. Unnecessary effects harm speaker credibility.

Using Your SlideShow While Speaking

1. Don’t let equipment distract you.2. Talk to your audience, not the screen.3. Have a backup plan in case of

malfunctions.4. Never shine a laser pointer in

someone’s eyes.5. Practice until you feel confident using

your slides.
