Psalm120

Preparation

How do you prepare your heart for worship?

Do you ever wonder why you find the assembly unfulfilling?

Psalm 120:1-2

I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me.

Save me, O Lord from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.

Psalm 120:3

What will he do to you,and what more besides,

O deceitful tongue?

Psalm 120:4

He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows, and

with burning coals of the broom tree.

Psalm 120:5

Woe, to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar!

Psalm 120:6Too long have I lived among those

who hate peace.

Psalm 120:7I am a man of peace;

but when I speak, they are for war.

Process of Preparation

1. Decision

Psalm 120:1

I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me.

If I admit there is a devil, then I must admit

I need help from a divine source.

It Begins With a Decision.

I Need Help!I Will Call for Help!

Psalm 18:3I will call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised and so shall I be saved from my enemies.

Process of Preparation

1. Decision2. Discernment

Psalm 120:2

Save me, O Lord from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.

John 8:43-44Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil . . . When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

2 Corinthians 4:4The god of this age (Satan) has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so they cannot see the light of the gospel.

Matthew 7:15They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but

inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

2 Corinthians 11:14

Satan himself

masquerades as an angel of

light.

Process of Preparation

1. Decision2. Discernment3. Destiny

Psalm 120:3

What will he do to you, and what more

besides, O deceitful tongue?

Psalm 120:4

He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows, and with burning

coals of the broom tree.

Psalm 73:12-13This is what the wicked are like—always carefree, they increase in wealth. Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure.

Psalm 73:16-17When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.

Psalm 73:19-20How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors! As a dream when one awakes, so when you arise, O Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.

Philippians 3:19Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach (appetites) and they glory in things they should be ashamed of.

Process of Preparation

1. Decision2. Discernment3. Destiny 4. Dissatisfaction

Psalm 120:5Woe, to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar.

Ezekiel 32:26Meshech and Tubal are there, with all their hordes around their graves. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword because they spread their terror in the land of the living.

Isaiah 21:17All the pomp of Kedar will come to an end. The survivors of the bowmen, the warriors of Kedar, will be few.

I feel like I am among pagan barbarians.

What am I doing here?

1 Peter 2:11-12I urge you as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God.

Process of Preparation

1. Decision2. Discernment3. Destiny 4. Dissatisfaction5. Declaration

Psalm 120:6-7

Too long have I lived among those who hate peace.

I am a man of peace;

but when I speak, they are for war.

Shalom – Peace

2 Corinthians 10:3-4For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to tear down strongholds.

1 Peter 2:11I urge you as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.

Revelations 12:8-9That ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

1 John 5:19We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.

The first step toward God is a step away from the lies of

this world.

Philippians 4:6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Philippians 4:7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

We meet with God to renew ourselves.

We gain the courage to live as lights among a dark, pagan

people.
