I was completely blown away with what I saw both in and out of the ring last time we were in Newcastle. Lewis has fast become one of the most popular and exciting fighters in British boxing and now he gets an opportunity to challenge for a European title. He has cleared up domestically and this is the next step. I have been counting down the days til this one. It’s so exciting to come to a city where the fans get behind their fighters so enthusiastically. Last time out was something very special and this one will be even bigger and better. Lewis is a star with a city behind him and now we are on the World title march. Standing in his way is former European Champion Francesco Patera who has never been stopped in 22 fights. Patera is no stranger to fighting on these shores, having lost a close decision to Birkenhead hardman Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd for the WBC International title in 2016. He went on to beat Finland’s Edis Tatli to win the European title in May 2017 before losing out in a rematch later that year.
The Belgian insists that he won’t be put off by the wall of noise created by the Toon Army on Saturday and has plenty of experience at winning away having defeated Tatli on foreign soil. Also on the card we have a brilliant domestic battle between Sunderland’s Glenn Foot and Liverpool’s Robbie Davies Jr for the British and Commonwealth titles. This shapes us to be a brilliant battle that can’t fail to deliver. This is a fight that would probably be main event on most other cards. Robbie has been waiting for a fight like this for a while and heads into Saturday in the shape of his life. Glenn is as tough and game as they come and won’t want to surrender the Commonwealth crown in front of his North East fans. Rising Light-Heavyweight star Joshua Buatsi makes the first defence of his WBA International title against former Anthony Yarde opponent Tony Averlant in another step up. Joshua is one of the best prospects in World boxing and has been faultless as a professional so far,
he’s racking up experience at a fast rate in the paid ranks and is destined for the top of the sport. Hugely popular Heavyweight David Allen returns to action after his devastating stoppage win against Nick Webb at The O2 in July. Allen is back in love with the sport and is aiming for another big knockout when he takes on Germany-based Syrian Samir Nebo. Elsewhere on the card Cruiser-weights Simon Vallily and Craig Glover face off in an eliminator for the British title in a great opportunity for both men. I’d like to say a big well done to the hugely-popular ‘Benwell Bomber’ Joseph Laws who has personally sold nearly 1,000 tickets in just his third professional fight, he takes on Birmingham’s Chris Truman in a decent test, and I look forward to the professional debut of Commonwealth Games bronze medallist John Docherty. We would like to thank the Metro Radio Arena, William Hill, JD Sports, StubHub, Sky Sports, DAZN and all of tonight’s officials.

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE METRO RADIO ARENA AS LEWIS RITSON AIMS TO BECOME EUROPEAN CHAMPION AGAINST FRANCESCO PATERA.
A WELCOME FROMEDDIE HEARN
WE HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT EVENING AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
GEORDIE LIGHTWEIGHT ACE AIMS TO BECOME THE FIRST MAN TO STOP PATERA
Fast-rising Geordie Lightweight
hero Lewis Ritson makes the step
up to European level on Saturday
when he takes on Belgian Francesco
Patera for the Vacant EBU title in
front of a packed-out Metro Radio
Arena.
The 25-year-old sensation says he
must “deal with” Patera to get to
where he needs to be but expects
the fight to go into the later rounds.
Ritson is feeling unstoppable after
producing another stunning display of
brutal power to destroy Paul Hyland Jr
in one round to take home the British
Lightweight title for keeps in June.
The ‘Sandman’ put the unbeaten
Belfast man away in a similar
fashion to the devastating defences
against Manchester’s Joe Murray
(first round) and Lytham St Anne’s
Scotty Cardle (second round).
His fanatical support blew the roof
off the Tyneside arena last time
out and the Forest Hall fighter is
promising another unforgettable
performance this weekend as he
sets his sights on European honours
and beyond.
“First impressions, I thought
Patera was a bit of a cool character
actually,” said Ritson. “I didn’t get
much from him. He looks calm, he
RITSON - I HAVE TODEAL WITH PATERATO GET TO THE TOP
looks confident, and hopefully that
will suit us down to the ground. He
will come to fight and not run away.
“Me and the team think I can
become the first man to stop him.
We don’t think it’s going to be like
the rest of them, he’s going to take
me into the later part of the fight,
but I think I’ve got the tools to take
him out.”
“If I get rid of him, then maybe
we can look at fringe World level
opponents. I think we’ll be done
with European. They are the two
best contenders. I think we go onto
World level and see how we do with
that.
“It’s another step on the ladder. If
I want to get to where I want to be
then I need to deal with people like
Patera and get him out of there. So
it’s a good step up for us and we’re
ready.
“The Lightweight division is
absolutely stacked. Even from like
Ricky Burns, Crolla, Campbell, then
obviously you’ve got the elite like
Lomachenko and Garcia. It’s a hard
division to be in, but we think in the
next year or two, we can compete
with the likes of them.”
A Toon Army mad Riston met his
number nine idol Alan Shearer in
the build up to his European title
shot and is dreaming of following
in the Newcastle favourite’s
footsteps by bringing more
memorable nights to the hallowed
turf of St. James’ Park.
“A huge Word title fight at St
James’ Park down the line is the
ultimate dream and the club
are more than happy to help us
achieve it if we can get to that
level. It all depends on who is
available to fight, and what fight
it is. Obviously it’s got to be for a
World title, I don’t think any other
fight would be big enough.
“The likes of Alan Shearer and
Matt Ritchie will be sat ringside
on fight night and having their
support is a massive boost for me.
It’s nice for the Newcastle team,
and ex-Newcastle players to get
behind me, and hopefully they will
stay that way, and we’ll bring some
more big nights to Newcastle.”
FORMER EUROPEAN CHAMPION PLANS TO OUTBOX RITSON IN FRONT OF TOON ARMY
Francesco Patera says he has the
experience and brains to outbox
hometown hero Lewis Ritson in
front of his adoring fans.
The former European Champion will
be hit by a wall of noise when he
steps out in front of a sell-out Metro
Radio Arena on Saturday night but
insists he will not be fazed by the
fanatical Geordie support.
“It doesn’t bother me, I actually
like it when the crowd are against
me,” said the Belgian. “It will be
an electric atmosphere and I can’t
wait for it. I’m sure it will bring out
the best in me and push me on to a
victory.
Patera has seven stoppage wins in
a fight log of 19-3 and the 25-year-
old, from Genk, plans on using brain
not brawn in Tyneside this Saturday.
He is well versed in fighting away
from home, having won the Euro
crown on foreign soil against Edis
Tatli in 2017.
“From what I’ve seen, I know I can
beat him. Our styles should gel and
make it a good fight for the fans to
watch both in the arena and on TV.
I’ve got the experience and think
I have faster hands than Lewis,
there’s attributes that are in my
favour for this fight.
“I have brains and I’m going to be
boxing with my brains, I know what
I can do to hurt Ritson. He’s very
highly rated but we’ll see after the
fight how good he really is. I haven’t
been stopped or knocked down in
my career. Much has been made of
his power, but don’t bet against my
own skills. We’ll see – I’m not scared
about the challenge that lies ahead.
“I was on the wrong end of a decision
against Masher Dodd a few years
ago, so that’s an added incentive
for me to go out and get that win.
The European title is something I
cherished when I had the belt and
a win here would not only get me
the belt back but put me closer to a
World title shot.”
PATERA - I’VE GOTTHE EXPERIENCE AND THE FASTER HANDS
LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT RISING STAR JOSHUA BUATSI FOCUSED
WBA International 175lbs Champion
Joshua Buatsi remains fully switched
on to the task at hand.
With various domestic dustups on
the horizon, the Olympic Bronze
Medallist has only one name on his
mind – Saturday’s opponent Tony
Averlant.
“There’s no next week in my
boxing career as it stands. It’s all
about Saturday night, then we can
hopefully sit down and plot the next
move,” said Buatsi.
“Too many fighters are thinking two
or three fights down the line which
can be a dangerous thing to do.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s some
big fights out there which I want –
But I’m taking it one at a time.”
The 7-0 talent has enjoyed all of
his wins in both London and Cardiff
but has heard the North East
atmosphere is something special.
“I can’t wait to box in front of the
Newcastle fight fans. I’ve heard so
much since the last fight up here and
the respect I was shown at the launch
press conference was fantastic.
“They are proper boxing fans up
here and clearly back their own, so
I’m looking to put on a display to go
alongside a Lewis Ritson win.”
Up next for Buatsi is Averlant, who
most recently went rounds with
fellow Londoner Anthony Yarde.
“People are sure to compare my
performance against Averlant with
that of Yarde’s but I’m on my own
path,” explained the level headed
25 year old.
The overall goal is to win World
honours, but for now ‘JB’ is taking it
one fight at a time.
“Step by step we’re getting there,
I’ve now got the first title in the bag
which gets me on the ladder. It’s
shaping up to be a big year ahead
but I can’t get complacent.”

David Allen says he needs to beat
Samir Nebo in “devastating fashion”
if he is to set up a showdown with
former WBA Heavyweight ruler
Lucas Browne at the end of the year.
‘White Rhino’ returns to action
this Saturday at the Metro Radio
Arena in Newcastle as he takes
on the Germany-based Syrian on
the undercard of Lewis Ritson’s
European title fight against
Francesco Patera.
Nebo has only two losses in 13
fights, with all of his wins coming
by knockout, but Doncaster’s Allen
is confident he can defeat Nebo in a
similar style to his brutal stoppage
of Nick Webb at The O2 in July.
“I’m going to get Nebo on the hook,
and I’m going to smash him,” said
Allen. “I will never win another
fight on points. None of them will
go the distance ever again. I fully
anticipate knocking out Samir Nebo
inside four rounds.
“I’ve seen a few rounds of him. He
looks solid, like he knows what he’s
doing. He’s just outside the top
100 in the World and it’s another
good challenge for me. I see it as a
building block towards a big fight
hopefully towards the end of the
year.”
Allen is eager to take on Australia’s
Browne in December if he gets a win
in Newcastle and believes a fight
with the former World Champion
would be another entertaining
encounter for his fans.
The potential match-up has been
gaining momentum on social media
in recent weeks with the pair calling
each other out on Twitter.
“He’s old enough to be my dad, but
Lucas Browne is a tough, strong,
powerful man. I think if the fight
happens next, it will be at the right
time for me. I’m young, fresh, and
I’m coming through.
“He was the Heavyweight Champion
of the World, but I’m the future,
and I think it would be a fantastic
fight. I’ll take the Browne fight in
December, I’m ready for it. I need
to beat Samir Nebo in devastating
fashion. The Lucas Browne fight is
the one that excites me.”

ALAN SHEARER IS BACKING LEWIS RITSON TO GO ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP – AND THE NEWCASTLE UNITED LEGEND HOPES THE LIGHTWEIGHT SENSATION FOLLOWS HIS PATH AND PACKS ST. JAMES’ PARK FOR A BIG FIGHT NIGHT
A star-struck Toon Army mad Ritson
met the number nine idol in the build
up to his European title clash with
Francesco Patera on Saturday night
(October 13) and the ‘Sandman’
has sold the Metro Radio Arena out
after packing it to the rafters for the
first time in June when he destroyed
Paul Hyland Jr in a round to win the
British title outright.
Gallowgate favourite Shearer knows
all about the fanatical support in
Newcastle after banging in 206
goals in ten seasons for his boyhood
club, and he believes that the fans
will soon be roaring him to World
title honours on the hallowed turf.
“This will be my first ever fight that
I’m attending so there’s no pressure
for Lewis!” said Shearer.
“The fans are incredible up in
Newcastle. If he keeps on winning
then a fight a St James’ Park could
happen as Lewis dreams of.
“That buzz when you walk out at St.
James’ is special. I never really used
to hear the singing on the pitch
during the game, when you walked
out the atmosphere was loud and
that’s when I used to soak it all in
but when that whistle went it was
game time and I was zoned in.
“I used to stand on the terraces as a
fan so to walk out and score in front
of your own people is that bit more
special. That’s the same for Lewis,
but he’s knocking people out!
“It’s been interesting to speak with
Lewis and understand how much
preparation goes in from his training
team to study opponents. When
I was playing I knew the strengths
and weaknesses of the centre backs
and map out in advance how I want
the service.”
Shearer and Ritson have a common
thread having both played for
famed kids’ team Wallsend Boys as
kids, and the hitman-turned-pundit
thinks the club has played a part
in his success – and along with his
close bond with his trainer father,
could help him stay at the top when
he’s there.
“When I was a young boy playing at
Wallsend Boys club it taught me a
lot. Lewis played there as well and
some of that discipline will have no
doubt rubbed off on to his game.
“Having his Dad standing there in
the corner for each fight must be a
proud feeling for the both of them.
“What I would say to Lewis is the
easy part is getting to the top,
but the hard part is staying there.
He’ll have the money, house,
holidays and car. The opponents
will know more about him and the
level is only going to get tougher.
It’s not easy and he’ll have to
probably come through some
tricky moments but he’s got a
great team around him.
“I’ll be there ringside and will be the
first one to lead the songs when the
Blaydon Races comes on.”

SUNDERLAND HARD MAN GLENN FOOT SAYS HE WILL GIVE LIVERPOOL’S ROBBIE DAVIES JR THE “BIGGEST SHOCK OF HIS LIFE” WHEN THE PAIR CLASH FOR THE VACANT BRITISH SUPER-LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE AND THE COMMONWEALTH TITLE IN NEWCASTLE
Foot defends his Commonwealth
crown for the first time against
Davies Jr and his determined to
add the prestigious Lord Lonsdale
belt to his collection on the biggest
night of his career to date.
“You have to take the opportunities
when they come along and this is a
great opportunity,” said Foot. “It’s
a great show to fight on, live on Sky
Sports and DAZN as well. I want the
big fights, I want all the titles I can
get my hands on and there isn’t a
better stage to get them.
“I’ve got to thank Eddie for bringing
the show back to Newcastle and
Lewis Ritson for being the boy up
here at the minute. The atmosphere
was unbelievable last time, I’ve
never experienced anything like it.
It’s going to be even busier and even
louder this time and I can’t wait.
“This is a big opportunity for Glenn
Foot and I’m going to take full
advantage of it. Robbie Davies Jr
will get the biggest shock of his
life on Saturday. Last time I boxed
for the British title against Sam
Eggington I wasn’t quite right, I was
still recovering from a bad arm injury.
Now I’m 110% back in the game and
I’m ready to win that British title.
“I don’t expect him to stand toe-to-
toe with me. I think he’ll run like a
thief. But whatever he does, I’ll be
ready. Robbie does have a fair record
but he’s been wrapped up in cotton
wool. When he stepped up he was
knocked out by the Polish lad and in
his last fight he ran. He’s stepping
up again against Glenn Foot and it
won’t end well for him.”
FOOT - ROBBIE DAVIES JR WILL GET THE SHOCK OF HIS LIFE
Liverpool ace Robbie Davies Jr
meets Sunderland’s Glenn Foot for
the vacant Lord Lonsdale belt and
the Commonwealth crown that
Foot landed in March in Glasgow
with an 11th round stoppage
against Scotsman Jason Easton –
and Foot puts that title on the line
for the first time against Davies Jnr,
who goes for his first big titles this
Saturday.
The 29-year-old exacted revenge for
his sole career loss in March on home
turf against Michal Syrowatka,
reversing the 12th round stoppage
that he suffered against the Pole in
London last July, and is determined
to win the British title for his late
father.
“I’d like to thank Eddie for getting
me back on the shows, I started
to think that it was never going
to happen,” said Davies Jr. “This
really is a pick’em fight. You’ve got
Glenn’s aggression and physical
strength against my speed and
power. I’ve got everyone down in
my neck of the woods backing me.
It really is going to be one of them
fights where neither of us will need
to go looking for each-other.
“These are the kind of fights you
want. I’ve been fighting a lot
of high level foreign opponents
recently so it’s good to get in
with an English lad. I know
what a game guy Glenn is. I’m
confident of coming through this
fight victorious and it’s going to
be an exciting battle that can’t
disappoint.
“The British title is one of the
greatest titles out there and
winning it for my dad would be
the perfect tribute for him. I’ve
got so much desire to go out there
and win it for him on Saturday.
Winning the British title would
put me right back in the mix, so I
know how important this fight is.”

MIDDLESBROUGH MAN HOPES GLOVER WIN WILL SET UP TITLE SHOT
TONY BELLEW-MANAGED CRUISERWEIGHT AIMING FOR KO
Middlesbrough’s Simon Vallily
wants to put the frustration of his
draw with Afran Iqbal behind him by
knocking out Craig Glover.
The former England Elite Squad
amateur missed out on the English
Cruiserweight title last time out
at the Metro Radio Arena in June
and is determined to put things
right when he gets another chance
to showcase his skills to the Sky
Sports cameras on Saturday.
His first professional title was
within touching distance against
Iqbal but he failed to wrestle the
English title from Iqbal after a
rough ten round battle as two point
deductions scuppered his chances.
Vaillily believes winning in style
against Glover will earn him another
title shot.
“I’ve had a look at Craig Glover
and I don’t think there’s anything
for me to be worried about,” said
Vallily. “I’ve got another massive
opportunity to showcase my talent
in front of the Sky Sports cameras
at a packed-out Arena and I won’t
waste it this time.
“I’ll be on my game on Saturday and
getting the job done in style. I’m going
in there for the KO and I’m confident
of getting it, I want blood in this one.
When I smash Glover my name will be
back in the mix for titles.”
Liverpool Cruiserweight Craig Glover
is aiming for an eighth career KO
when he takes on Simon Vallily in a
scheduled ten rounder on Tyneside.
The Bellew protégé made his paid
debut at Goodison Park on one of
Merseyside’s most historic sporting
occasions in 2016 and has only one
loss to his name in nine outings.
“I watched Simon’s fight with Iqbal
and I wasn’t that impressed,” said
Glover. “He started okay but faded
quite quickly. I just think he’s in
trouble if he eases off against me.
“I believe I’m going to knock him
out. It could go early, it could go
late – But I’m 100% confident in
stopping him at some point.”
Glover is confident he can climb
the Cruiserweight rankings with
former WBC World Champion
Bellew backing him and is aiming to
impress in front of the Sky Sports
cameras on Saturday.
“It’s always nice to be able to pick up
the phone and ring Tony for some
advice. He’s there when I need him
and for him to oversee my career
is a huge honour. I’ve known Tony
for years. He’s a boss fella and he’s
always helped me out any way he can.
“I’ve already had a setback in my
career so I can’t afford another one.
On paper he should be the favourite
but it’s not going to work out that way.
This is a huge stage for me and I’m
going to deliver a big performance.”

Hugely popular Benwell prospect
Joseph Laws says he is “living the
dream” as he prepares to take on
Birmingham’s Chris Truman in
his third professional contest this
Saturday at the Metro Radio Arena.
Laws has entertained a press
conference with his boyish
enthusiasm and Geordie charm,
become Twitter buddies with Eddie
Hearn and taken part in his first ever
public workout in recent weeks, but
the 21-year-old is keeping his feet
firmly on the ground and focusing
on the job at hand.
“I’m living the dream,” said Laws.
“It really hit me at the public
workout on Wednesday evening. I
had a great crowd in there to see me
and I love all of the support I get.
“But I’ve trained really hard and I’m
there to do a job. Truman’s got a
winning record and he’ll be coming
to win, that’s what I want.
“That will bring out the best in me and
get me the win. I’ve sold almost 1,000
tickets,” said the former Birtley ABC
crowd favourite. “The atmosphere is
going to be incredible, and I can’t wait
to experience it. I’m buzzing.”
Laws will have coach and mentor,
Graeme Rutherford, in his corner,
the man who has set the McCormack
twins and Callum French on the
road to glory.
“I’ve been with Graeme since I was
14/ 15 and I wouldn’t want anyone
else coaching me,” added Joseph.
“I think I’ve come on even more
since the last fight and I can’t wait
to show the World what I’m about
on Saturday.”
Rio 2016 Olympian Anthony Fowler
keeps busy with an eight round
contest against Gabor Gorbics
on Saturday as he targets a huge
domestic showdown with Preston’s
Scott Fitzgerald later this year.
Fowler produced a vicious knockout
of Craig O’Brien after a dominant
performance in London last time
out while Fitzgerald stopped Craig
Morris in ten rounds in his last
outing, and the Liverpool man
thinks it is the perfect time to take
on his former teammate.
“I know Scott well, we boxed in the
amateurs and we sparred for years
on Team GB,” said Fowler.
“It’s one of those things, it’s not
personal. I like Scott as a person,
he’s a good lad but he’s a name that
will progress my career. I just want
to be involved in the big fights that
fans will enjoy. After I take care of
business on Saturday I hope Scott
steps up to the plate and agrees to
fight me in December.”
Fowler’s future is in the safe hands
of trainer Dave Coldwell, the man in
the corner of Tony Bellew, Jamie and
Gavin McDonnell and Jordan Gill. ‘The
Machine’ is learning everyday alongside
his gym mates, and Coldwell expects
Fowler to be ready to take on some
domestic rivals at the end of the year.
“Fowler is where I would want him
to be at this stage of his career,”
said Coldwell. “Progress has been
made recently with the stuff I
wanted him to work on, but there’s
more to be done if he’s to fulfil the
potential that I believe he’s got.

FOWLER READY FORFITZGERALD SHOWDOWN
Talented amateur John Docherty
makes his professional debut in
Tyneside this weekend after signing
a promotional agreement with
Matchroom Boxing in the summer.
Docherty landed Commonwealth
Games bronze for Scotland in
Australia in April, defeating England’s
Ben Whittaker to reach the semi-final
stage and land his medal.
The former Team GB man has chosen
to join the paid ranks following his
success Down Under and will follow
in the footsteps of three-weight
World ruler and Scottish legend
Ricky Burns by training under Tony
Sims in Essex.
Docherty starts life as a Super-
Middleweight against Jordan Latimer
and the 20 year old cannot wait to get
his pro journey underway in Newcastle.
“I am so excited to get my pro career
started,” said Docherty. “I loved my
time with Team GB and representing
my country in Australia was a huge
honour, but that chapter is closed
now and I cannot wait to test myself
in the pro’s.
“It’s brilliant to team up with
Matchroom Boxing, and training
with Tony in Essex is going to bring
me on so much. There’s lots of class
fighters in the gym and of course,
I’ll be training with Ricky, who is a
legend in Scotland and someone
I’ve always looked up to, so to be
able to learn from him every day is
going to be amazing.
“I’m very fortunate to be making
my pro debut on such a great card
alongside so many talents such
Joshua Buatsi and Lewis Ritson,
bring it on!”
“He came into the pros a successful
amateur with good strength and
power, but that will only get you so
far. He’s got very good attributes
that I want him using more, and
that’s what we’re working on.
“Right now, it’s about keeping his
feet on the ground as I know he
probably thinks he’s ready for the
World now. That’s just the way he
is. After Saturday we’ll definitely
be looking at fights that are going
to bring the best out of him and get
him up the rankings quick.
“There’s a few guys who I think are
just a little bit ahead of him now,
but someone like Scott Fitzgerald
towards the end of the year would
be a brilliant fight for British boxing. I
like Fitzgerald as a fighter. Although
he had a bit of an off night last time
out. I do think that he’s someone
who will bring the best out of Fowler.
“The domestic scene at 154lbs is
starting to take shape and I’m very
confident that Fowler can be a big
part of it moving forward.”
